Gordon Williamson
Here are some wartime period window displays from shops selling orders and decorations. Some of them are after the 1941 prohibition on the retail sale of high end awards like the Knight's Cross and above. (Even after the prohibition, firms were allowed to retain examples purely for display) Looks like there was no shortage of Knight's Crosses and even Grand Crosses available for such displays. This one is October 1940

David Gregory
Gordon,Very interesting. Where did these images turn up?I wonder how many members here could recreate some of these displays with what they have in their collections.David
Ulsterman
very interesting. I note that one NSDAP LS medal is displayed in similar fashion to the mother's cross. Is there any other contemporary evidence of ladies wearing it as a neck award?
Paul R
Those are some great photos. What publication did you get these photos from?
Gordon Williamson
Images are from Uniformen Markt , the "trade paper" for uniform outfitters, retailers of badges and awards etc. The Germans were anxious that awards should be displayed "tastefully" and with respect and ran a regular item in the paper showing examples of what were considered good window displays. There were several for uniform outfitters shop displays too.
Paul C
While not a period display pic this is an actual sign that would have hung in the window. I may sell it if anyone has an interest, just PM me. Edited January 30, 2008 by Paul C
