stevo4361 Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 Hey guys, Just got this cross in today, and can't figure out the mm on it. It has the pictured mm on the ring, and then another on the smaller ringlet, which looks like a upside down 3, M, or E, or a V. (in a box, or 'mortice') Can't seem to match it to the databases of makers, anybody know? Appreciate the help, Kind Regards,Steve[attachmentid=13360][attachmentid=13361]
Gordon Williamson Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 Difficult to make out , but turning it this way it looks almost like it could be a badly struck WS with the first "leg" of the W faint.Given how many of the 1914 EK2 marks are "unknowns" you may well have discovered a new mark.
stevo4361 Posted October 16, 2005 Author Posted October 16, 2005 Thank you very much Mr. Williamson, I sure appreciate it!Kind Regards,Steve
Bill Garvy Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 (edited) Respectfully, it looks like a "WA" to my old, tired eyes, and if it is indeed a "WA", it is the first one I have seen. Regardless, Mr. Williamson's assessment is, as always, on the "mark", ahem. . . Edited October 17, 2005 by Bill Garvy
Tom Y Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Here's a WA for comparison. I kinda think that's what you've got.
Gordon Williamson Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Bill, Tom, I think you are correct. !Do we know if there are two variations of the mark ( i.e. WA and Wa) in the same way as FR and Fr.Certainly looks like an upper case A with the apex missing.
stevo4361 Posted October 17, 2005 Author Posted October 17, 2005 Thanks Mr. Williamson, Tom, and Mr, Garvy! Is it known what maker "WA" was?Kind Regards,Steve
stevo4361 Posted October 17, 2005 Author Posted October 17, 2005 Thank you Mr. Williamson, I sure appreciate your and everyone's expertise on this cross, thanks again for all the help!Kind Regards,Steve
Motorhead Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 It looks like a "Wa",but it could be also a "We". Ok,"We" is stamped usually at the small ring-but especially at the'14 EK2 everything is possible.....Gordon,do you think "FR" and "Fr" are just different variations of the same maker?Micha
Rendsburg Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 ...and, if I'm not wrong, we can see the crescent moon.Otto
joe campbell Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 my vote's for the We.nice crosses,all!joe
Gordon Williamson Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 .....Gordon,do you think "FR" and "Fr" are just different variations of the same maker?MichaMicha, I suppose we are sure that Fr are the Friedlander pieces and I have seen FR quoted as Frank & Reif. The obverse cores of the Fr and FR EK1s are different but the reverse fittings, and the placement of the mark are almost identical. Thats an awfully big co-incidence. Frank & Reif described themselves as a metal stamping firm, even their WW2 badges are simple stampings in zink like the GAB, PAB. I've never seen any proof that they made the EK.
Biro Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 If it's of any help, Friedlanders mark on their PLM's is capatilised.... 'FR'....Marshall
Motorhead Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 Funny thing-I've got two EK2"FR",both with the same core.....and three "Fr"EK2-all totally different! But one of my "Fr"EK1 looks like it has got a"FR" core! Strange........Micha
Daniel Murphy Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Since Wagner and Godet each have several MM's attributed to them, so could Friedlander. I agree that both marks are theirs. My HHOX Knights Cross is marked "FR" as well.
