Eric Stahlhut Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 here is an odd one. the paint has worn from highlights of the brass core. the 'w' has been silvered. but by whom? upon close inspection the paint on the core shows crackling--especially on the right arm.
Eric Stahlhut Posted July 30, 2008 Author Posted July 30, 2008 frames are silver and cross is vaulted. mounting hardware is odd..
kay bunnecke Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 (edited) mmmmm,,,i have my doubt about this one,,details off the crown are not very nice, rezemble's a deutscher officiers ferein crown somehowbut then again the W is not correkt also the 1914 makes no cenceso it cant be a dof,pin system is not what i wud expect from a period ek... in my upiniun its not an original ekbut I can be wrong on this,,,,,stranger things appeard in the pastregards kay Edited August 2, 2008 by kay bunnecke
Chris Boonzaier Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 There were no controls or restrictions as to who could make these in the 1920s and 30s.I once had a 1030s catalog from a company selling balloons, banners, christmas trinkets... and EKsDetails on WW1 cores can range anywhere from superd to Barf.BestChris
kay bunnecke Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 (edited) joure wright,,,,,but as far it consurns this ek ,,,,,it cant be re'tracet to some kind off maker ,,,,,,(((as far as i know))) maybe someone can ))))pin uncnown,,, hinge more 1939 type ,,but to small,,,the kwality is very bad and has a ugly look to it so it can be a example off a verry ugly production off some kind off balloon maker ,,,,but mostley forgers are tend to make this kind ugly types.....(((.and I seen a lot off them)))thats what i will think,,, if someone offered this ek to me,,,,until there's no proof off other examples and also retraceable proof off some kind off maker ,,,,orwe sombody steps forward in this case,,,and knows more about itthis ek chud not be seen as original,,,,,,,sorry Eric,,,save joure money Edited August 2, 2008 by kay bunnecke
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 2, 2008 Author Posted August 2, 2008 thanks for your opinion, kay. much appreciated! however i tend to think that the piece is a good one--albeit perhaps messed with at some point.it's just another fugly 20s/30s variant; and it's far harder to find something like this--ostensibly from a small operation--than it is to find a fake, imo. never know when another forum member will pipe up and type, "hey, i have one too!"(btw, i've had the thing for quite a few years) do me a favor, though--if you ever see this hybrid style somewhere else, please let me know!best, ~e
joe campbell Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 have to agree with eric here...there was a real interwar market for this type of "pride" piece... and lots ofjewellers to provide for that market...hey! c'mon!....are there ANY REALLY ugly ek's?????only the fake ones are ugly.and the ones stripped of their patinaby some misguided folk...feel free to send you "ugly" ones toJDC 123 main street anytown, USA
Tom Y Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 hey! c'mon!....are there ANY REALLY ugly ek's?????An extreme example, but in my opinion MEH made EK's with a core only a mother could love I have some doubts about it, too, but wouldn't condemn it out of hand.

Richard Gordon Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I haven't come across one like this before and as Chris points out, anyone could make these. That's what I love about the 1914 EK1...it seems an endless list of variations! Rich
