Mike Dunn
Here is something I have had for a while now. I find it with a 1914 bar and crown but not without one. This one is casedand wihtout them. I was wondering if they were the same or two different grades for the award. mike

Eric Stahlhut
hiya mike, this thread prolly belongs over on the imperial section. anyways! a similar volunteer medical cross was first issued during the 1870/71 war with france. that version is devoid of a crown un the upper arm of the cross, and had straight angled arms. there was an 1870/71 bar for it.your version was instituted in 1901 and can be found alone (like yours), with a '1914' bar, and with the silver crown and the '1914' bar. so i guess there were three grades.the version with both the bar and crown is very rare. redcross
while the bar and crown are rare, when buying - do make certainthat the bar and crown were issuedand are not upgrades by the frankenstein medal bar folksI was offered one once thatused a Belgian crown and whenI pointed this out, I was told it wasa very <g> rare variation

Wild Card
Gentlemen,For comparison, here is an 1870 cross. Yes, the border of the center medallion is black, not blue.
