What's interesting... my hypothesis is that 1 decree equals 1 awarding (at least, I've yet to come across documents with the same decree number). This would imply only very, very few awardings! Roughly 200 per year. This would also explain why we see so few award documents. Perhaps only 7.500 awarded? Of course, maybe some medals, etc. were given away without a decree (or document for that matter). What's "good" to see is that the dates / decree dates are perfectly ascending. So probably awardings were all centralized in Tirana.Would appreciate if anybody with new docs could PM me:- award name- awardee name- date- decree...both to further expand on the list and, potentially, to reunite groups.Could somebody please make this a sticky thread? Eric Schena
I wish I had some documents to add to this list, but they have been hard to come by for me. I may have a few scans of some, though, that were not in my book. I'll see what I can dig up.

There are some cases, specialy during 1945-1960) of emeted a group decree. After that period, for any decoration emeted, exist a decree. In Albania does not exist the mode to give decorations without decree.Regards,Artan
Bob
Thanks Artan - excellent piece of info "from the source" which confirms that truly awarded orders/medals are very very few and therefore the documents are quite rare (and a lot of the awards on the market are actually left over stock). For Albania orders/medals enthusiasts, this'll be the next area of focus I suspect - getting the award documents which (hopefully) allow for research in the (military) archives at some point. It's the highest numbered one I've heard of so am curious.I will leave it to the captain to give us hope for research
Bob
Stealing from an email exchange with the captain:Until 1949- All awards were given by certificate number ( no decree )- Observed numbers range from 1686 to 5473- One certificate number = one awardStarting 1950- Awards were given by a decree number (no more certificates) with one decree corresponding to many awards and thus also awarded persons- It appears the decrees started to be numbered fresh again rather than continue from the last known certificate number- Open question: decree numbers ONLY relate to awards or are also interspersed with decrees e.g. to build a bridge somewhere, defend against the pending invasion of Albania by foreign powers, etc.?- A known example is medal for bravery and medal of liberation given to the same person with the same decree number 1948 date 25.10.1954- Based on my list, roughly 7000 of these decree numbers (thus a multitide of actual awardings but unclear how many)Starting ?- One decree corresponding with one award
albania
- Open question: decree numbers ONLY relate to awards or are also interspersed with decrees e.g. to build a bridge somewhere, defend against the pending invasion of Albania by foreign powers, etc.?the answer to this question was answered by Mr. Lame . According to my documents the decrees started after the 1950 and one award one decree started after 1959?????the decrees issued by Presidium of Peoples Assembly were generic so each decree corresponded possibly to eg a bridge or an award and so on.even though is still difficult to get a definite number of the awarded persons we now have an idea. Bob
Yep, let's say around 6000-7000 during the first period (1 certificate = 1 award) and for arguments sake another 7.000 during the second period (decrees will have multiple awards (impossible to say how often this occured, not many award doc's and even more rare to find them with same decree nr) but there'll also be decress on topics nothing to do with awards... which would imply potentially 15.000 awardings. If we assume the third period is post-socialist then we have a decent guesstimate for the area of our collecting interest. Best thing would be: more documents, and research! :jumping:
Bob
Interestingly enough, I dived into my collection of awards documents and found an odd case:- award document with the phrase "certificate" on it- yet ALSO with the reference to a decree number (in the same spot as where other "certificate" documents have a number (e.g. 1234) this document has "1234 i dekretit")Hmmm :speechless:

Bob
Is it just me, or does that name sound Russian? Would be very interesting to get the translation of the reasons for awarding! :jumping:
Zaim Qyteza
Is it just me, or does that name sound Russian? Would be very interesting to get the translation of the reasons for awarding! Dear Bob,Certainly that the colonel is Soviet one. During the years 1947-1960, a number of Soviet officials, was in Albania as instructors and specialists near the units of the Albanian army. The text of certificate said: ?FOR UNTIRING WORK AND AKTIVITY TO ENFORCE THE POLITICAL-MILITARY PREPARATION AND THE FIGHTING ALERT OF THE UNITS OF THE ALBANIAN PEOPLE?S ARMY?. Bob
Below an update. The first two awards actually are with certificates while the rest are with decrees. This provides tentatively a range: - certificates from 1 (?) - roughly 2500 - decrees from 1 (?) - 7350? For the decreed ones, it's clear the nr of decree increases in line with increase in date of awarding so these must have all been centrally adminstered in Tirana. The lengthy awarding period for the Order of 40 years PPSH is intriguing.
