Doug See Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 (edited) Nice one. Love the detail on that crown. Wonder who made it? Edited November 16, 2005 by Doug See
Bill Garvy Posted November 16, 2005 Author Posted November 16, 2005 Doug,I don't have a clue. Here is a shot of the reverse with the "800" silver content stamp on the pin. . .
Glenn R Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 A finely made cross. Very noticeably rounded corners. Lovely
joe campbell Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 worn with great pride and care for many years!this one's a beauty, bill!joe
Bill Garvy Posted November 16, 2005 Author Posted November 16, 2005 (edited) Thank you, gentlemen, and yes, I am indeed fortunate to have picked up this "sterling" example. . . See what you started, Joe! Edited November 16, 2005 by Bill Garvy
Stogieman Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 Hi Bill. Nice example. I have always liked these crosses with the very heavy, blunt pin. I do not recall ever seeing one with this style of hinge/pin/catch with a maker mark.
joe campbell Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 bill-i didn't start NUTHIN'!these are like a beautiful femme,sitting in a cabaret sipping Pernod,waiting for an introduction....i just introduced you.YOU stole the first kiss!!'tis a slippery slope....joe
Doug See Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 Hi Bill. Nice example. I have always liked these crosses with the very heavy, blunt pin. I do not recall ever seeing one with this style of hinge/pin/catch with a maker mark.Hmmm.... Try comparing this to one with the little square mark on the pins or backs. Those usually come with the straight, fat, blunt pins also.
Bill Garvy Posted November 16, 2005 Author Posted November 16, 2005 (edited) Here are a couple of comparison shots of the reverse of my "800" and another Iron Cross maker marked with a "square" from a colleague's collection. Although the clasp appears similar, the hinge and pin appear, to my old tired eyes, quite dissimilar. What do you gentlemen think?"square" maker mark reverse:"800" silver mark reverse: Edited November 16, 2005 by Bill Garvy
Stogieman Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 Hi Bill, the tip & body of the pin look very similar..... but the attachment to the barrel of the hinge looks very different....
Motorhead Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 @Bill.....welcome at the dark side That's a really nice one-I love this detailed cores! There are some sililarities between yours and the "square",but I'm shure they where made by different makers.I think "square" and "CD 800" are from the same tools, but compare the core(especially the numbers)-different.But anyway-to get that EK was very well done(because of my job I can't hunt at Ebay at the moment........)but the next one that's coming across my way it's mine! Micha
Chris Boonzaier Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 His as wellhttp://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=3523...650entry32650
Motorhead Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 (edited) Hi Bill,I must be blind.......I've got the brother of your beauty, but with a little extra.Look at the obverse-same core, just a little more used. And a s a bonus, the reverse with a little extra @Chris-very impressive stuff! the pic of the EK is a little small, but I think it's from the same type. Chris Boonzaier Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Are the hooks on from day one or added by a jeweller for the winner?BestChris
Motorhead Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 That's hard to tell(it wasn't awarded to me),but it looks like a professional work.I'm not shure, but the reverse of one of these is shown in a book(I think in the Previtera).A collector friend of mine has got the same type of cross with this hooks-so I think they are original to this ek and not later added! I'm not at home at the moment, but if you want I can take some shots from an angle next weekend. I don't want to mess with the hooks......you know what I mean.Micha
Stogieman Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Well isn't that interesting. How does the width of the side-hooks compare to the pin? Are they all made from the same material?
