hunyadi Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 (edited) This was recently sold in the sales section... It is clearly a simple bar - but it is missing the last medal on the bar. I am at a loss as to what the medal should be. As you can see from ribbon, it is a simple white field with orange/red stripes. Anyone have any idea what medal should go there? hunyadi Posted July 17, 2009 Author Posted July 17, 2009 will post photos of the reverse - does anyone have a image of the Hessian medal in the mean time?
TacHel Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Red stripes are a bit narrow for a Red Eagle Order or Medal... Or even an Honor Medal... Hmmmm...
Kev in Deva Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 How about a "Verdienst Um Den Staat" medal?Kevin in Deva.
HeikoGrusdat Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 that`s what TacHel said before - and that`s why we need to see the back - maybe you can see some colour traces there because the stripes are too small for all red eagle / AEZ things......... all is guessing now
TacHel Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Mind you, I have seen an Honour Medal and a Red Eagle Medal mounted with such a ribbon, but only once, and IMHO, wrongly.Other similar ribbons (228, 267, 294 & 465) make very little sense and I very much doubt they are correct for this bar...Ribbon 211 for the "F?r Tapferkeit" medal from Hessen-Darmstadt (most likely Ludwig III) like VtwinVince hinted, is the most likely candidate if this isn't a poorly manufactured Prussian ribbon. Are we going to see a pic of the reverse?
hunyadi Posted July 17, 2009 Author Posted July 17, 2009 and a shot of the bottom edge which has the most "color" to it....
Kev in Deva Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 If its any help I improved the light on the original picture for more clarity.Kevin in Deva.
Guest Rick Research Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 OK, very VERY pale robin's egg blue faded to off white-- typical of Hessian awards even in the World War.That is the General Decoration Medal-- LOOKS like the "Bravery" Medal of the same name and identical obverse BUT--the ribbon stripes were much narrower-- which is what you have here. The reverse inscriptions were for things like "for merit," "for long years service," and even "for saving life."Ribbon is #210 and 211 in the Deutschland Katalog, for awards 870-883 and 886-892.
hunyadi Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 OK - many thanks - now off to find one....
saschaw Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Sorry to disagree with all said, but in my eyes this is a mid 30s bar for Frontfighters' Honourcross and Hungarian WW1 medal... Anyone to agree?
TacHel Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Because of the construction of the plate and pin? I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on that part.I can possibly see the 1870/71 medal not being original to the set and being replaced by a Frontkampfer but that other ribbon being the WW1 Hungarian medal? THAT I simply cannot agree to... If it is in fact from the 30s, then I think the other ribbon is still from Hessen as previously thought.IMHO...
Tom Y Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 OK - many thanks - now off to find one.... Any Ludwig III medal, which would be contemporary with the bar, is going to be hard to find and rather pricey.
Eric Gaumann Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Sorry to disagree with all said, but in my eyes this is a mid 30s bar for Frontfighters' Honourcross and Hungarian WW1 medal... Anyone to agree? That's what I thought at first as my Hungarian medal's ribbon has faded similarly. But my example's reddish parts are wider, extending almost all the way to the edge.
Tom Y Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Sorry to disagree with all said, but in my eyes this is a mid 30s bar for Frontfighters' Honourcross and Hungarian WW1 medal... Anyone to agree?Even taking into consideration the fading, the laddering should still be noticeable and the difference between the blue green center stripe and white outer stripes.
