andy Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 (edited) Can anyone tell me if the Imperial EK1 case was issued with an outer cardboard carton?. If so, does anyone have any pictures they could post?thanksandy Edited December 11, 2005 by andy
Tony Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 (edited) Hello Andy,I would have thought it was issued with the outer carton. The reason being is that my one has a seal (I believe later ones didn't have the seal) and the white printed paper glued to the carton says "Nur von dem Beliehenen zu ?ffnen" which roughly translates to: only to be opened by recipient or only to be opened by the person bestowed upon etc.Tony Edited December 11, 2005 by Tony
Tony Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 The light is poor this time of day but here's another view.
TerryG Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 (edited) nice one indeed with that seal Edited December 11, 2005 by TerryG
andy Posted December 11, 2005 Author Posted December 11, 2005 Thank you Tonythats exactly what I wanted to see. Is this the only one you have come across?regardsandy
Stogieman Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 Hi Andy, The outer box in WW1 stayed essentially the same across the board. All were issued with the Orders Kanzlerie Seal and were probably only contracted with one maker. The box is consistent between multiple makers, unlike the WW2 cross which will have several variations.
joe campbell Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 and when you think about it, this one-beingperhaps 90 years old-is in very nice shape!thanks for the question and the pix!joe
Tony Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 Hello Andy,They crop up on ebay.de now and then and go for crazy money.Stogie, Thanks for the tip on all of them having a seal. I have seen them without and was told they were late war cartons.Tony
Stogieman Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 I think the ones with no seal simply have lost it. I have not seen one without the seal that did not have evidence that it was once there. "Double-boxed" as we say, brings very strong money for one of these, even with a shabby carton. They add a very nice touch. often, you will find a name/unit penciled on the box somewhere. other times, you'll find just a stone-mint set-up that came from his surviving family...
Tony Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 often, you will find a name/unit penciled on the box somewhere. other times, you'll find just a stone-mint set-up that came from his surviving family...My one has the name in pencil but it's sooooooooo faint that it can't be read. Now how annoying is that?
Ralph A Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 (edited) More. All maker marked.Left to right, Godet, Wagner, CD800, KO. Edited December 12, 2005 by Ralph A
Stogieman Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 Just a quick note.... Ralph's crosses are marked, not the outer boxes.
joe campbell Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 ralph-beautiful!!if you ever need to have a fire sale,i'm first in line!very nice pix.joe
Tony Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Andy,This looks like a nice one if you fancy spending a lot of money or if Ralph would like another one. http://cgi.ebay.de/Eisernes-Kreuz-1-Klasse...1QQcmdZViewItem
Stogieman Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 The eBay cross is one of the earlier pieces IMO, that used many "leftover" 1870 cases.... These earlier cases are usually slightly domed, deeper real velvet insert, gold EK on the lid and "nail-head" opener. The earlier production for WW1 followed the exact same design, but held a different style (non-domed) lid. These are beautiful pieces....
