demir Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Dear Ottoman Militaria Collector Friends, I would like to share my information about the Ottoman Army belt buckles. OTTOMAN BELT BUCKLES DURING WW1 During the WW1 the Ottoman Army used M1909 belt buckle which was originated from German M1895, produced of brass (Type A) (pressed to obtain the obverse figure) or brass with an attached nickel-silver front plate (Type B). The buckle is 45 mm. (app. 1 ¾ inches). On the buckle there is a star and crescent with the Ottoman script "Asakir-i Sahane" (Asakry Shahanah) (Sultans Army-Ottoman Army) on it. Now, if you have seen or have several Ottoman Army belt buckles you may have noticed that there are two types of script. The text on the right side of the crescent may differ. Although, the meaning is same "Asakir-i Sahane", the style is different. Please check the pictures below. As you see the bottom buckle has a big stretched "S" type figure (type S) while the one on the top has a "SL" style figure (SL type). Sincerely I don't know which one is earlier made. The pictures of "S type", Type A and B are from my collection. Best wishes Demir Erman Type "SL" and Type "S"

itaca Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Hi, very beautiful and fascinating these buckles. There to help seat belt buckle of my 'Ottoman Empire. These are photos I have of how grim I see the holes that were made to bring other things of beauty or distinctive. In your opinion is relevant to the belt? See you soon Ithaca </p>
demir Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Hi, They do not belong to the belt. NOT NORMAL. I think somebody later added some ornament and had to pin it through those 3 holes on both sides. Demir
itaca Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Hello, thanks, leather and the buckle have been together for many years, not a modern work. Do you have any references on the belt to see the original?
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Hello, thanks, leather and the buckle have been together for many years, not a modern work. Do you have any references on the belt to see the original? Hi, it was often done to make souvenier belts ("Hate" belts). Soldiers put bottons and badges all over them. In this case they have been removed again. Best Chris
