Even modern subs don't have a lot of room to allow the wearing of such a large cap. The most common hat seen worn on the sail of a Russian sub is a light/medium blue wedge cap. As for the lanyard, the guys wearing the lanyards are on parade. It would not normally be worn on duty. Not really a germane question comparing the girl's uniform to the guys on parade. The girl is wearing the uniform of the Russian Federation navy while the guys on parade are wearing the naval uniforms of the USSR. The pictures below of Soviet sub crewmen and officers show both black and white hats being worn for different circumstances. Gordon Craig Posted April 6, 2010 Share Posted April 6, 2010 bigjarofwasps, I should have mentioned earlier that in the worlds navies, including Russias,white topped hats are worn in the summer and dark topped caps in the winter. For Europe the white topped cap wear period is usually April until September. There is always exceptions of course. German sub commanders have always worn a white topped visor cap and still do.
