bigjarofwasps Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 Hi Guys, Can anyone tell me what colour Russian submariners hats were/are?
TacHel Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 (edited) White or black, depends on the occasion. White for parade, black for work. But I believe the young girl in the black flat top is a mere cadet. Edited April 5, 2010 by TacHel
bigjarofwasps Posted April 5, 2010 Author Posted April 5, 2010 White or black, depends on the occasion. White for parade, black for work. But I believe the young girl in the black flat top is cadet. Thats a great help thanks!!! Am I right in thinking that as she is a cadet thats why she hasn`t got a lanyard, or are lanyards not worn in working dress?
Gordon Craig Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 bigjarofwasps, I don't think you would find either cap on a sub. Even modern subs don't have a lot of room to allow the wearing of such a large cap. The most common hat seen worn on the sail of a Russian sub is a light/medium blue wedge cap. As for the lanyard, the guys wearing the lanyards are on parade. It would not normally be worn on duty. Not really a germane question comparing the girl's uniform to the guys on parade. The girl is wearing the uniform of the Russian Federation navy while the guys on parade are wearing the naval uniforms of the USSR. Regards, Gordon
TacHel Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 Oh brother... I spend so much time in the Russian Federation section that I forgot where I was... As I was saying... The pictures below of Soviet sub crewmen and officers show both black and white hats being worn for different circumstances. But Gordon is correct, although worn ashore, I very much doubt these would have been worn on board a sub.
TacHel Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 (edited) I believe that once on board and under way, that most preferred this side hat. You can see both officers and petty-officers wearing it. Edited April 5, 2010 by TacHel
Gordon Craig Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 TacHel, Thanks for the great pictures. That is the hat I was referring to as commonly seen in wear on board a sub. I couldn't locate mine or I would have posted a picture of it. Regards, Gordon
Gordon Craig Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 bigjarofwasps, I should have mentioned earlier that in the worlds navies, including Russias, white topped hats are worn in the summer and dark topped caps in the winter. For Europe the white topped cap wear period is usually April until September. There is always exceptions of course. German sub commanders have always worn a white topped visor cap and still do. Regards, Gordon
