OK.... I have found the missing link....

Black on white that the OFFICIAL Certificates for the Iron Cross 1914 were to be awarded by the central ordens commision after demobilisation.

There have been hints at this, especially after the kaisers order in 1918 that all docs issued should be considered to be the final one... but anything predating that has been elusive (to me in any event).

Now I have a mid war doc with the text "this document is a preliminary document, the official doc will be awarded by the Ordens commission after demob"...

For me pretty much the missing link... :-)))))))))

Dong! Damn, I missed that somehow... yes, about the same wording but a regular printed document, specific to the 56th Infantry regiment.

Of some importance 8to me anyway) is that both units with this on their doc are from the 14th ID.

    Best

I guess the officials of the 14.I.D. got tired of answering the question, "When will I get my official document" and just printed the answer on the temporary one.
