I am from Mongolia but not hero of my quiz. Hint#5: He is not Mongolian...
    AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!! :banger:

I interpreted that as the person we're looking for is in fact from Mongolia but the one I mentioned (Lieutenant-General Damdin Tserenjav) is not the one we're looking for... :wacky: :speechless:

As the reason for this quiz is educational as much as a way of enjoying ourselves - it is encouraged that questions require more than just a name but where possible, they ask about specific events or reasons why a person may be famous. This ensures that answers are at worst reasoned guesses which teach us all something new.

Please keep this in mind for the next questions.....

Frank, I was wondering how long it would take you to figure out that "I am from Mongolia" was not a hint. That was a real wild goose chase.... :cheeky:

I would say that our man died in the 1941 purge....carried the rank of lieutenant general. There's a few names there. A handful actually.

I just cannot research them as my browser keeps crashing!!!! Already re-installed it today to no avail!!!

Initially I thought he was recipient 1 of an order awarded circa 5,000 times and of another awarded 57,000 times - I've got a feeling I too was on a wild goose chase there..... the reference is probably to a group of men and not recipients of an order .......

His boss received the order of Victory - perhaps Zhukov.....perhaps he was in the Battle of Khalkin Gol

And the bounty on his head....intriguing!!!!

There are enough hints and we're probably just looking for our man from the wrong angle.....

    :banger: indeed!!!

    Jim

Awarded HSU 29 in 1937 and HSU 5 in 1939!!!

Khalkin Gol and Zhukov was the right link indeed!!!

    From wiki stub:

Yakov Vladimirovich Smushkevich (Russian: Яков Владимирович Смушкевич; April 14, 1902 – October 28, 1941[1]) was Commander of the Soviet Air Force.

He participated in the Spanish Civil War where he was known as "General Duglas" for which he received the Hero of the Soviet Union.[2] He was in charge of aviation for the 1st Army Corps at the Battle of Khalkhin Gol, receiving Hero of the Soviet Union. He was the commander of Soviet Air Force from 1939 to 1940. He was arrested on June 8, 1941[3] and executed on personal order of Lavrentiy Beria on October 28, 1941.
