Erik Krogh Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 Here are some components stripped out of U-Boats from my collection. Circular plates.
Erik Krogh Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 Rectangular plates and my best guess at English translations: Hauptruderanlagen • Main steering system Schaltkasten • Switchbox Ers Vorwärmer – 5 Min später Ölreiniger abschalten • First pre-heater - off 5 minutes later, oil cleaner Lüfter darf nur zeitweise bei Schlichtfahrt ausgeschaltet warden • Fans may only temporarily be turned off in finishing ride Seewasser - vorwärmer erst einschalten wenn wasser umläuft • Sea water - turn only when water heater circulates Magnetkupplung für Langenwinkel • Magnetic coupling for target angle (one of three angles of the firing triangle) vordere rohre/achtere rohre • front tubes/aft tubes Zieloptik: (Ziel = target) Optical sight TZR: Zielrichtungsgeber (T.Z.R.) Erik Krogh Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 Gauge 1. An exact duplicate can be found in the stern torpedo room of U-995.
Erik Krogh Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 Gauge 2 with small KM acceptance stamp above screw.
Erik Krogh Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 Mount for Zeiss optics. Does anyone know how this might be used on a U-Boat?
Erik Krogh Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 (edited) Dive alarm descriptive plate detail. You can see the KM acceptance swastika and "M" poking out from underneath the plate. Edited July 2, 2011 by Erik Krogh
Erik Krogh Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 Descriptive plate attached to the torpedo loading rails for tubes 3/4. There are similar plates attached to the rails in U-995's bow torpedo room.
Gordon Williamson Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 Fascinating stuff Erik ! Given the range of U-Boat types and that fact that even the smallest of them must have had hundreds of such labels and many many gauges and similar bits of equipment, there must have been a bewildering amount of material like this - most of it now of course at the bottom of the sea. Its a great pity there aren't any reference works available on this kind of material.
joe campbell Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 erik- i suspect you have had a fine time collecting these wonderful pieces. i am trying to imagine where/from who/ how long you've been after them? gordon's idea re: a reference concerning this might be a challenge, but you've got a good start! joe
kapten_windu Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 wow, very nice U-Boot parts, I just saw some of the U-Boot part on 'Das Boot', and i like the radar and "soundwave hearing component'' of it..
Erik Krogh Posted July 4, 2011 Author Posted July 4, 2011 Gordon, Joe, and Kapten, Thanks for the comments. I too find these artifacts fascinating. You don't see a lot of this on the market - the occasional engine telegraph... I wonder if there is much of an audience for a reference book. I would love to see one! Best, Erik

Erik Krogh Posted July 25, 2011 Author Posted July 25, 2011 Morten and John, Thanks! I'm increasingly drawn to collecting pieces that were "there". Working on building a U-Boat in my back yard... Does anyone have a spare pressure hull lying around? Erik
