CHRIS W Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Here's my little Saxe-Meiningen medalbar. It has a couple of things that odd to me. The Saxe- Meiningen medal has a ring attachment that I have never seen on this medal before. The medal is bronze. Is it a early war piece or a 1920's private purchase? It is also the only bar I have seen with a enameled Saxon Vet's cross mounted on it.Chris
HeikoGrusdat Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 great bar Chris!!!! I love these Veteran enamel pieces - sometimes harder to find than the "official" enamel!!!
CHRIS W Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 Thanks Heiko. Have you ever seen this style ring attachment on a Saxe-Meiningen Medal?Chris
Stogieman Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Hi Chris. First time I've see that type of suspension on the S-M War Medal and the first time I see this Saxon Vet's cross mounted as well. Very cool! Congratulations!
Guest Rick Research Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 The Meiningen medal doesn't look bronze in the scans-- it looks quite grayishly ZINK. That may be why this style suspension-- which I've never seen before either. Soldering zink doesn't work too well on something like a tiny suspension loop, so maybe this was to provide extra strength in an inferior alloy?
joe campbell Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 yep.i think this one looks more zink, butalmost like it had a bronze wash...the eye configuration is novel.nice bar!joe
Stogieman Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 This could be an interesting trend.......... a duplicate of this type of suspension was just spotted by moi in Germany. Chris, how long have you had it? Still no doubts as to authenticity, just curious! How often can we say we've spotted 2 of the same thing we have not seen before!
Ramblinfarms Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 (edited) Are there classes to the Saxon Vet's Cross, i.e. officers and enlisted, or first and second class? When you refer to the "official" one, are you describing the fire-guilded cross with the enamel center coat of arms on obverse only, and a wreath without swords? No enameling to the arms either. CHRIS W Posted January 25, 2006 Author Posted January 25, 2006 (edited) Hey Stogie, I saw that bar too. I have had my bar about eight years. I knew sooner or later I would see another one. Do you think these are 1920's manufactor?Chris Edited January 25, 2006 by CHRIS W
Stogieman Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Hi Chris. I have nothing to guage this on. It would make sense that these were possibly late-war, or 1920's pieces simply with the fact that they are zinc. This one doesn't have the nice finish like yours does.
dond Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 (edited) Here is another one straight from Germany, from a seller in Dresden. All the medals are secured so they don't jingle around. Or is this the same bar that is shown above??? Edited February 6, 2006 by dond
dond Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 The reverse. Unforunately moths have feasted on the backing. Still I love these bars with multiple bravery awards from the guys that did the "real" fighting. Enlisted guys rule!
Stogieman Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 It's nice to see the Sax-Meiningen piece mounted in these varied presentations. It's another of the harder to find medals in mounted groups.
Guest Brian von Etzel Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 Still kills me SM had the same medal for the same valor in two classes...
