Mariner - a very interesting discovery. 200 tons of pure silver !

The spokesman for the salvagers said - ' we honour their memory ' - what he means is thank goodness they got sunk.

The comments below this are very strange - seem to be some very 'liberal' antiBritish comments ?

However, I do agree that it is wrong that we let a foreign company reap the benefits. The silver belongs to Britain and we should have had a British Company salvage it and put it into the Bank of England - they could have been paid a fee.

why didn't britain take the initiative and get off of their posteriors and salvage the silver themselves??

Should have got the Somali Pirates on it they would have had it up in no time (with a bit of prest labour).

Whose idea was it to put so much silver on board one ship anyway, and send it right into the wolves den!!!. As for the salvage, speaks volumes really, especially when you consider all the legal ramblings over the salvage of the gold on the Edinburgh!!

If you think that's bad go look at this

It was in the Times today. Dutch scrap gypos are using craned claws to rip the ships apart to get to the metal. Almost 1500 lives were lost on these WW1 torpedoed ships and it seems the Dutch police are having trouble stopping them. Anyone gotta boat, I'll bloody stop em

It says that aircraft confirm the illegal activity. They should have dropped a few "eggs" on their decks and they could have JOINED the ships below! Although I realize it would be poetic justice if they were torpedoes.
