Chris Boonzaier Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 So... other than this being for a very low ranking man, making it very scarce in itself... why is this of such large US interest? It was awarded in the weeks after the unit was pulled out of the line...
Paul R Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 The Battle of Belleau Wood?!!? WOW!!!! That is one battle of WW1 they(Marines) drilled into our heads during training. What a cool document. I have not seen a document of the EK1 to a private before. Have you Chris?
Ulsterman Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 an EK1 to a mere Musketier for a battle against the USMC? OMG!!! JAW dropping!
dmiller8 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 I can recommend this Wikipedia article on the Battle of Belleau Wood: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Belleau_Wood. There are no disclaimers concerning its accuracy. It also states that the German 237th Infantry division participated in the battle, providing an immediate link with the certificate. Since a number of Distinguished Service Crosses, Navy Crosses and Medals of Honor were awarded over the course of that battle to Americans, an EK1 awarded by the Germans is evidence that heroism was not limited merely to the victors.
Chris Boonzaier Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 I saw a map the other day showing that the 461 IR was in fact plumb in the middle of the battlefield...
Chris Boonzaier Posted May 5, 2012 Author Posted May 5, 2012 an EK1 to a mere Musketier for a battle against the USMC? OMG!!! JAW dropping! I have a number of EK1s to Senior NCOs and a handfull to Gefreiter, but this is the lowest ranking EK1 I have.
Chris Boonzaier Posted June 9, 2013 Author Posted June 9, 2013 8th and 9th of June! http://pierreswesternfront.punt.nl/content/2008/07/belleau-wood
Ulsterman Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 (edited) Dude, seriously, that may the rarest and best thing you own. An EK1 to An E2 for a brutal slugfest against the USMC? it would be like finding an RK doc. To one of the Panzer oGrenider officers who broke the 108th in the Bulge or a Sacred Treasure awarded for Iwo Jima. if you ever want to sell, act ually, I do not think I could afford it. Ulsterman Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 by the way, saw the flag of the 461 st last year. it was offered to me for a mere $300.
redeagleorder Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 (edited) Dunno what's rarer, that its for Belleau Wood or and EK1 to a private! Congrats on the doc!!! Edited June 9, 2013 by redeagleorder
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 15, 2013 Author Posted October 15, 2013 What a bummer, there is no regt history for this unit :-(
E Williams Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 I have some info about the Div but nothing directly about the Regt. If you have , Histories of Two Hundred and Fifty-One Divisions of the German Imperial Army, you have that info also.
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 29, 2014 Author Posted January 29, 2014 I was just reading an article... the Regt was in the treeline the day the Marines arrived on the outskirts of the woods... and were the main defenders... they lost 85% of their men during the battle.... I gues there were none left to write the regt history.....
Chris Liontas Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 WOW!!!!......just WOW!!!! Scott Kraska has a small collection of Belleau Wood Marine uniforms, I bet he would love to see this!!! JUST WOW
