To clarify Guyana, which is to the east of Venezuela, was the originally The British Colonies of Essequebo and Demerara and Berbice (all rum lovers will know the middle name) which were formerly Dutch colonies taken by the British in 1796 after the merger of Berbice and Essequebo and Demerara in 1831 the colony became known as British Guiana and remained so until Independence. Although Guyana is part of South America for cricket purposed it is considered part of the West Indies and test matches are held at Georgetown (which are inevitably rained off) two of Guyana's famous sons are the fat bowler Joel Garner and the late MP for Tottenham Bernie Grant (who many of our ex police members will consider as infamous to say the least).

    All the best,

Interesting... but it's the ODM I want to find out about, and there is very little information 'out there' to be found... let alone images :(

More as I do find it, though...

    Sorry Megan,

I only put the post in for the point of clarification as it had originally been put in the wrong place. We had some Guyana material in our last auction in the miniature section (lot 475) but alas we did not illustrate but some good news for you for future sales while our catalogues will be selective on illustrations in the hard catalogues, the on line versions we will attampt (within reason) to illustrate much more and as an old friend if there is ever anything that you would like to have a specific illustration of you only have ask and it will be done.

    All the best,

    Paul

A close up of the group of the past post to Brigadier General Patrick West.

The 1st Medal is the Military Service Star.

The 2nd Medal is the Military Efficiency Medal.

The 3rd Medal is Border Operation Medal.

The 4th Medal is Guyana Defense Force 25th Anniversary Medal 1965-1990

The 5th Medal is Guyana Defense Force 40th Anniversary Medal 1965-2005

The 6th Medal is Guyana Defense Force 50th Anniversary Medal 1965-2015

I know Guyana gained its Independence from the UK in May 1966, but the Guyana Defense Force was formed on 1st November 1965.

Look carefully the bird in the "insignia" on obverse of medal 4 to 6, it is the badge of the Guyana Defense Force.

Please also note that the suspension of medal 4 to 6 vary, greatly (they shall not have been struck by the same company).

    Regards to all.

    Hello Gentlemen,

I ounce grabbed this photo on a web site, belonged to the web site of the University of Guyana. No idea why they get a display of their medal, but I choose to post it here, because the Military Service Medal is rarely seen.

From left to right we have

Guyana Defense Force 40th Anniversary Medal 1965-2005.

Guyana Defense Force 25th Anniversary Medal 1965-1990

    Guyana Border Operation Medal

Guyana Military Efficiency Medal (the first medal of the military efficiency, manufactured by Spink's had a blue central stripe much more darker).

    Guyana Independence Medal 1966.

    Guyana Military Service Medal.

    Guyana Military Service Star.

    * for the record, the Military Service Medal (miniature), posted by Ilja on 13 April 2013, has an incorrect ribbon, actually the one of the Military Service Star.

    Regards to all.

Since the 1970ies Guyana had 3 Medals for its Services branches from civil services,

    Service Star

    Meritorious Service Medal

Long Service and Good Conduct Medal

The same medals were used for the respectives 3 Branches of Service : Police, Fire Fighter & Prison (each time with a different ribbon. But each of the 3 medals bore on its reverse the Stick of Police, the Axe of the Fire Fighter and the Key of the Prison.

Much later in the early XXI Century, there was the need of others medals for Police Service.

And then, ounce I had the occasion to buy these 3 Medals in London, in summer 2019

    Respectively, from left to right

    Guyana Police Force Efficiency Medal

Guyana Police Force Commissioner's Medal of Honour

Guyana Police Force Tactical Efficiency Medal.

The seller had only one set of medals with their ribbons mounted. I was the lucky guy that was in the shop that day.

    Regards to all.
