JapanX Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) date postcard was written was 29 August 1917(19 29/VIII 17) also postmarked Minsk 1917. Paul You got me! Of course it is 1917. Sent from Minsk by praporshik Michael Bezsonov to his sister in Kiev. He is writing that he again" was drawn into a terrible whirlpool of events". He is "hoping that russian officer corps will cope with difficult situation". He promised to write again as soon as he get back to front ... Edited July 24, 2013 by JapanX
JapanX Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) After a little digging in the library The badge itself was introduced on October 13, 1916. Design was changed (crowns disappearance ) on September 5, 1917 (by the order of minister of war). Also found original line drawing - will post it in a couple of days  Edited July 24, 2013 by JapanX
Claudius Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 2.1.jpg 2.2.jpg 2.3.jpg I don't want to hijack this thread. If fact I think the photos of these medal bars could have its own thread. They are incredible! (or at least I like these bars from the lower ranks) I would love to see them today. I wonder what happened to them. Museums. Private collections. Or were they all lost when they were just taken apart and destroyed after the revolution? It makes the little two-er that I have seem really puny.
JapanX Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Who knows ... Some of them certainly was destroyed (I'll post an interesting photo for you in couple of days)... Others went to immigration together with their owners and vanished there... And of course some of them are in private collections all over the world. Hijacker!
JapanX Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Talking about "destroyed after the revolution" ... http://gmic.co.uk/index.php/topic/59240-proposed-resolution-tear-of-his-medals-and-shoot/
JapanX Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Another very interesting badge (with green enameled shield without inscriptions)
JapanX Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 (edited) Another photo of the badge Most likely 5th Kiev School Edited July 26, 2013 by JapanX
JapanX Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Well, I guess the correct english name for these badges will be Badge, marking the graduation from the schools of infantry ensigns, which were filled up with the students of the higher educational establishments. Theoretically all shields on eagle's breast should be covered with green enamel and bearing gold letters (initials of schools). But on practice we observe different colors of enamel or no enamel at all. Same goes for the initials of schools... Initials usually very simple. Russian letter Ш (for школа/school). Sometimes additional letter П (for прапорщик/praporchik/ensign) First letter in the name of the town where school located + arab numerical (in case there are several schools in one town) As for today the following initials are decoded
