saschaw Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 I guess he got the 4th just one for having a strong neck? Never seen anything like this... wow!
Mathomhaus Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 A friend of mine back in the 60s had a great-grandmother who was a maid in charge of putting out fresh linen every day in the Catherine Palace. I look at this fellow and all of his awards and I wonder what his job was and where. I am next to worthless when it comes to reading handwritten Russian. Does the inscription on the reverse either say or give a hint as to how he served the tsar? Thanks. Regards.
JapanX Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 The back inscribed Please accept as a token of memory much-esteemed Artumiy Ivanovich Turgenov September 8, 1877 K. Venitchenkof Photo was made in Kharkov. He looks like a local official ... Maybe a merchant? Cheers, Nick
Mathomhaus Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Dear Nick, Spasibo bol'shoi for the translation and the suggestion as to what the fellow in that great portrait might have done to earn his medals! Regards
JapanX Posted July 29, 2013 Author Posted July 29, 2013 Another gent who practiced the same style of wearing
JapanX Posted July 29, 2013 Author Posted July 29, 2013 (edited) This gendarme officer really should use this "garland style" for his second "king-size" Edited July 29, 2013 by JapanX
Mike M Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 I believe that its the most amazing imperial Russian photo I've ever seen !!! Thank you.
JapanX Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 I guess he got the 4th just one for having a strong neck? Talking about strong neck Sascha
JapanX Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 Not really "for zeal", but no less impressive badge of Moscow city council
JapanX Posted October 4, 2013 Author Posted October 4, 2013 Interesting photo of naval officer with neck "for zeal"
JapanX Posted November 9, 2013 Author Posted November 9, 2013 Back inscribed "My godfather Ivan Fadeevich (?) Belinsky"
Mathomhaus Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Now that you are back on target with Zeal medal holders, please allow me to take you off course for just a minute: in your excellent archive of portraits, do you have a photo that could reasonably pass for Erast Petrovich Fandorin? Spasibo bol'shoi. Regards
