This was a gift for an old family friend. 1916 is stamped in the helmet liner.

    Hello,

I see it is your first post so welcome.

My eyes are not as good as they once were, the photo on my machine is a bit hard to make out.

I see from your profile picture you are still leading a busy lifestyle Doc?

Maybe you can do some better shots if time permits at some point.

If your engaged in an 'agressive camping trip', stay safe!

    Jock,

Thanks for the welcome, I am actually an old member with a new account. I am no longer active. As far as the helmet is concerned I had it authenticated by a collector and my plan is to restore it. The Imperial & state roundels and chinstrap or scales.

[1916] is stamped inside the liner and some kind of faded ink mark. Oh and '56' is stamped on the back rim underside of the helmet.

    Inside is "Wessenberg Cie//Cannstatt"

    Doc,

I noted your age and did think it is 'young boys (and girls) work' these days with all that body armour etc.

It is not an area I know anything about but I would think it will be hard to find the bits or have you a plan?

I hope it you manage it, I'm just about to stick the scabbard from the bayonet I found into the paint stripper, I hope I find some paint under the new paint!

    Hiya Doc!

Nice find indeed.... have had one on my wants list for ages... but the money has just never been there at the end of the month... someday...

    Chris,

It was an exceptional gift, from an old professor and vietnam era special forces veteran. I gently disassembled it today and cleaned it, then reassembled it. Fully restored it may fetch US $750.00, but it will become an hierloom for my son.

Here's an earlier Jager zu Pferde I obtained last February. It was completely covered in a layer of rust, but it cleaned up rather well. There is evidence of the wearer being caught in an air burst. The larger hole looks to have been caused by a shrapnel ball - part of which continued inside and went through the liner. There are also several needle-size punctures too. I doubt if the wearer would have survived!

Does anyone have any thoughts about the headless Wappen? Evidence of anti-German sentiment? De-'Kaiserfied' perhaps??

    Steve.
