    Hi gents,

for those, who haven´t seen my thread in a German forum, I have a small riddle for you, which might be tricky to solve.

The pictures below are showing Hermann Kellner II, "Major and Bataillonskommandeur of the Lippische Füsiliere".
The picture was taken between 1866 and 1867.
On his medalbar your can find the following awards:
    - Order of the Crown 3rd class with swords Prussia
    - Military merit medal (w/o swords) Lippe-Detmold
    - Long service cross for 25 years Lippe-Detmold (!!!)
    - war memorial medal 1866 Lippe-Detmold

Kellner II wears on this picture an uniform from Lippe-Detmold.

But what detail makes this picture so interesting?
You probably need some of the given information to solve this small riddle.

I hope you like it :-)

    Regards
    Roman

    Hi David,

very good question, the answer contains the solution of this small riddle.

Hermann Kellner II became "Hauptmann und Kampanie-Chef" on 10th May 1859.

On 15th August 1866 prince Leopold of Lippe-Detmold promoted him to "Major und Kommandeur "Unseres Kontingents" (=Fürstl. Lippisches Füsilier-Batallion).
Kellner II took over this position from the Major and former Kommandeur Carl Rohdewald, who was killed on 10th July 1866 during the battle in Kissingen.
Attached you see both promotion documents ("Patent zum Hauptmann" and "Patent zum Major").

Can you solve now the question related to his photo?

Ah, I see thanks for that :-) You would not happen to also have a picture of the Commandeur of the FB during the mobilisation of 1830-32? (a)

    Sorry...no.
Hermann Kellner II started his career in 1842 as volunteer. The earliest picture I have from Hermann Kellner II is from 1845-1849.

Do you need a hint to solve the riddle?

Ok, a small hint might be necessary...

Hermann Kellner II retired in December 1867, after the Lippische Füsiliere were integrated in the Prussian army (6. Westf. Infanterie-Regiment No. 55) in summer 1867.

The riddle is related to the rewards, shown on the picture, which were awarded on the following dates:
    - order of the crown 3rd class with swords on 20th September 1866
    - military merit medal on 30th March 1863
    - long service cross for 25 years Lippe-Detmold on 19th April 1866
    - war memorial medal 1866 Lippe-Detmold at the end of 1866 (exact date unknown)

Ok, it seems to be too complicated...I will solve:

Kellner II received the order of the crown 3rd class with swords on 20th September 1866.
The award document doesn´t state something special, but in connection with the photo of his medalbar,
this award becomes very special and extremly rare.
Kellner II received the Prussian order of the crown at the blue ribbon for foreigners and not at the black-white striped Prussian war-ribbon.
And this is consequently correct, because in 1866 Kellner was from the Prussian point of view still a foreigner, until the Lippe-Detmold army was
integrated in October 1867 into the Prussian army :-)

    Best regards

    Roman
