I picked this up on eBay, but I'm not 100% sure what it is. I bought it because of the Totenkopfhusaren.

As I understand it, these Vivat ribbons were produced to commemorate German victories, famous warships, etc. and were sold in aid of the German Red Cross. Some buyers apparently used them as bookmarks, but does anyone know if they had any other purpose, other than a decorative one? It's made from a fine silk weave, with the design printed on.

Here are the hussars in close-up. Mackensen's army apparently took 100,000 Russian prisoners at Lodz, and a column of PoWs can be seen snaking into the distance.

There's something about this scene that reminds me of the final battle in LOTR 2 - 'The Two Towers'!

Here another (Austrian) item. Had to make two scans. The Band was to large to suit my scanner. I noticed the other items are named VIVAT. This one is VIVANT. What's the difference?

    with kind regards,

    Jef
