IR61 Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 Hello collectors! I couldent find the info i was hunting about this medal. If there is a beter place for my question, you can move it there. Ibought this one many years ago(10), and it has been in a box ever since and not in my collection, becaus i have had a bad feeling about it… so now i ask Is it original or is it going back to the box of shame. kind regards Tommy
IR61 Posted April 8, 2023 Author Posted April 8, 2023 Hi. Nobody here collecting these? Or is it an obvious fake? I have understood that not all of these medals are makermarked…. and if it helps its weight is18grams. kind reg Tommy
VtwinVince Posted April 8, 2023 Posted April 8, 2023 There are many variants of this medal, and also many fakes floating around. Award types should be around 15 grams. Does yours have the die cutter's name in the neck area? Should say 'Schultz'.
IR61 Posted April 8, 2023 Author Posted April 8, 2023 Hi VtwinVince. No, no makermark on this one. I suppose its best to find one thats marked if i want to be 100% sure. Tommy
VtwinVince Posted April 8, 2023 Posted April 8, 2023 It could be a Spangenstueck, but I would go after a nice award piece.
saschaw Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 Your medal, Tommy, seems fine to me. Probably not an awarded one, but a (more or less) contemporary wearers' copy. It looks die-struck and of proper coining quality... much different than all those modern fakes flooding ebay and flea markets... On 13/04/2023 at 06:06, GMU said: This is mine…. This, however, looks a bit odd, to be honest, but it's probably the pictures... is it bronze, steel, or silver?!
IR61 Posted April 16, 2023 Author Posted April 16, 2023 Hello Saschaw! Thank you for your opinion! I did put it back in the ”box of shame”, but it seems like i can put in my German Colonial collection then! Kind regards Tommy

I'm sorry to say so, but this piece looks rather suspicious to me! The signature should, to my knowledge, read "O. SCHULTZ" and is way less apparent, sometimes close to invisible. Here's a steel example I handled a while ago... despite the obverse being the same for bronze and steel medals, these two medals cannot originate from the same die... Edited April 27, 2023 by saschaw
BlackcowboyBS Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 Here is mine on a single medal bar with Kalahari 1908 1
VtwinVince Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 Nice, most of the Kalahari bars out there are fakes.
