    1. The belt isn't wide enough for British webbing (3" width), did Canadians have narrower web belts? What was US webbing like? Great piece anyway. Tony
    2. This is the bloke Leigh found: Name: Thomas Mulrenan Estimated Birth Year: abt 1887 Age at enlistment: 30 Residence: 47 Lancaster Ave, Liscard Cheshire Document Year: 1917 Regimental Number: 277682 He was RE and the year of acceptance doesn't fit either.
    3. Good tip Chris. It took a while to find someone with a M16X1 fine thread die, but managed to borrow one earlier today. I now need to try some body - nipple colour matching. Tony
    4. I'll go for an OR collar dog, I think it's too small for a cap badge. They were made in 2 pieces as far as I know, brass and white metal. An officers badge may have been in real silver, hallmarked and if in 2 pieces, may have been riveted. All Brit badges are high quality
    5. French? I don't know if it's upside down, sideways or what. When did the French stop wearing that lovely shade of blue?
    6. Paul, Do you think this person was Luftschutz? If so, could this be an early war or even pre-1939 photo? I can read polizei on his armband. I don't know who he is but found the photo amongst those my wife's g uncle who was in the Luftwaffe. Tony
    7. My first piece of militaria was a MKII 1941 dated helmet bought with a whole week's pocket money. I don't collect WWII but still have it and thought it was WWI when I bought it. I was 8 or 9 at the time. Tony
    8. The liner looks Belgian to me (going by the colour) and if British, the size should be imperial as already mentioned. I think Belgian helmet shells have a slight indentation around the screw hole whereas Brit ones don't. As for value, well, I'd use it as a flowerpot but you could get anything like ?10 - ?15. If Belgian, it's post 1945. Just thought, is there any sign of flag on the side? Tony
    9. A cracking piece of headgear Didn't the Artists Rifles go on to be the SAS? Tony
    10. Hello all, Does anyone know where I can find a cheap fuze for a Grenatenwerfer grenade? If not, a photo so that I know what to look for would be handy. I need it for grenade pictured. Tony
    11. Thanks again for your comments, it's much appreciated. Hardy, thank you for taking the time to post the names of some of the fallen from RIR 119. Eric, no plans at the moment unless I can fit Verdun in, if Chris brings his trip forward a bit or delays by a week. Here's Frederick's name on the memorial at Thiepval and a view from the memorial looking in the general direction of Hawthorn Ridge (although it could also be more to the left). Tony
    12. I went to the Somme the other weekend and took some photos of F P Spencer's battlefield. Looking towards the crater roughly from British lines. The clump trees are growing from inside the crater.
    13. Don, Do you have anything on Inf. Regt. 119? I have a BWM to a casualty killed while attacking them on 1st July. The only info I've found on them was a snippet from the Reichsarchive book Somme Nord. Tony
    14. Dave, I'll have a stab. 1 Lt. Sommer 2. Bach 3. Meier 4. ? 5. Sch?ster 6. ? 7. Hollfelder 8. Zeu ??? 9. ? 10. ? What does the front look like then? Tony
    15. Andy, Yes it is 194mm. Thanks for the ID. Tony
    16. My son has bought his first piece of militaria with his own pocket money, it's the rather large bullet pictured. Can anyone tell me what is, A/A maybe? It has about a 25mm diameter. Thanks Tony
    17. Thanks Spotter, I'll check the site out. I bet I have a detailed description in one of my books, somewhere. Tony
    18. My only Victorian medal A medal for the brave fighters of the Empire in a war against upstart farmers who thought, for some unknown reason, they were being oppressed
