I was watching a documentry about the modern German navy, and surprised to see one Lady Sailor (or whatever they are called) had the rank "Sanitätsgast"... I am guessing maybe it is just a navy way to show who the "REAL" sailors are and who the specialists who are tolerated on their boats as Guests?

A good question... I have no idea. If he was badly wounded enough to get invalided out, he would have had the EK2 and Wound badge... Maybe by even applying for the French awards he would have crossed some forbidden line in German eyes...

This is intersting, he is wearing the DN in gold twice, I assume a regular award and one with a citation... I had not given it any thought, simply assumed it would all be on one ribbon.... Does this mean he would wear the medal twice as well ??

Can you put a "regular" one for comparision? Its not my collecting field... but I need some!!!

I would love to get a named one to a General who commanded a division at Verdun. As the French rotated their divisions, and the Germans barely did, quite a few French commanders would do ;-) At the Museum at Verdun they have Mangin's tunic.... if I could choose a single tunic of any nationality, that would be it ;-)

Dave, you are a star, I quite some time looking for him on the wounded lists and drew a blank. I got it from a guy who lives about 10km away from Kirrwiller, so that fits. His campaigns are listed as Belgium and Russia... and end there, so i guess the wound kept him out of the rest of the war. Thanks a million, Chrris

Yeah, But sometimes these grades are independant of rank. The Firm I am joining has a guy who was a Legion Dog handler, I will hit him up for the details, Will probably be beginning of next month though before I see him.

If it was a regular army dog handler, on the right chest, for someone with Para wings, on the left Pocket under the Ribbon bar. Best Chris

... just arrived today. Really expensive for a wound badge, and well meaning person glued it to a heavy board.... but he design in nice, and the unite veeeeery interesting.... The Infanterie Stabswache of his Majesty the Kaiser, provided protection and ceremonial Gaurds for his HQ. I am not sure where and when Friedrich Tiemann was wounded, he was probably posted to the Stabswache some time after his wound. A really cool doc IMHO

The Three grades are for CTE, CT1, CT2... which usually, (but not always) correspond to the level of training of Cpl, Sgt and Sgt Chef. Its not always the case as some specialists have the higher grade without the Rank. It is indeed a dog handler, for the whole army, the training used to be in the camp at Suippes by the 132e GCAT, not the 132e BCAT. Good to know that, the camp at Suippes is also a very famous battlefield, I had been wondering if anyone would notice if I just wandered in for a look... i will give it a skip... In the legion it was only the REP that had a dog section, but with the increased use of dogs over the last 10 years or so, there may now be more dog units, maybe the engineers...

Hi I will ask a few friends, I have seen them, but not in wear as far as i can remember. I dont think they are legion, but maybe standard army badges worn by the legion as well. Will get back to you tonight...

Metzger came from Alsace/Lorraine, was part of the German Army fighting in Belgium and on the Russian front, presumably wounded in September 1915 and nvalided out. As such he would very, very likely have had an EK2 and Wound badge. As service in the German army was not the "fault" of the people who lived in Alsace/Lorraine, and as far as I know, they did not qualify (or were not allowed to apply/recieve) the Hindenburg Cross, the French awarded them their equivelent, the Combattants Cross, and in this case a wound medal. Noticibly absent is a War service medal and victory medal, which a soldier serving in the French army would have recieved. He probably had the EK2 and Wound badge in a drawer.....
