The recipients name was written on the box and the 'issue' number also relating to this medal, I doubt it can be traced though.

Are these service medals the same as State medals ? The New York medal comes numbered.

Clearly visible the 'copper', the pin and catch assemblely is made of brass and soldered onto the badge.

Valid points Dave ! Thanks, I wasn't aware really about the authorisation being of a latter date as such, very interested to hear about Rickenbakers upgrade from a DSC too, and not until the 30's !!!

WW1 MoH: not to take away anything of the brave deeds of these men whom without a doubt deserved their American supreme award, but it also begs the whole question of the bestowal of MoH during the months of WW1 that American servicemen saw action. There was no proper prevailing award system within the American army at that time, what else could they award but the MoH, it wasn't until recognition of this very premise of a short fall compared to the other Allied armies that in January 1918 the Distinguished Service Cross was instituted and subsequnetly a year later the naval version. The Distinguished Flying Cross and Soldiers Medal in 1926 and in 1932 only then the Silver Star. Should there have been a system, how many recipents or not, what ever the case prior to 1918 would have been awarded another medal judged more 'appropiate' or the MoH. Kr Marcus

Ed, I bought this in the late 1980's, they were very common to find then, in fact not so hard in Europe to find today they're just peaking the ?1000 mark now which is absurd. I don't think they were illgal then to buy or trade either in the USA were they ? If I gave it to you for free as gift you can own one though It's crazy you can purchase Purple Hearts and other distinguished awards, groupings of a mans life with all nature of awards, but an unissued MoH made 'yesterday', you can't !! It's beyond me in sense and reason if honest.

That box I would hazzard at being earlier, is it a wooden one or aluminum i.e in the lid structure. This is perhaps a 1940/50's construction of the box, and like most medals in this paticular case style would have been used into the Vietnam era and post. The more modern made examples of perhaps my medals period even are larger and more square, an example of such can be seen on the Liverpool Medals site (dealer) I think I can assume this box is incorrect for mine. Do you have the medal for the box too ?

I just thought I'd show some pic's of one of my Medals of Honour. I don't think this is the correct box for this one, its a large black case, but I think it should have the designation on it. Anyone more conversed on these medals have any idea to what style of boxes they came in through the decades ? Could this be correct perhaps, I know the more recent versions that were available for sale come in desigantion titled boxes. It's an unissued 1970/80's medal which I purchased in the late 1980's. The scanner is playing up, so these aren't the best pic's. Kr Marcus

Hi Andy, Your cap badge with the M addition, I saw a RA cap badge with a single silver M in the middle of the scroll on a dealer web site.......it did state what it was, I'll have to take a look and see what it was as such in regards to that badge (if I can find the site again !!!) I'm pretty clueless on cap badges if honest, I don't know good from bad and I've no reference books yet. But please yes keep them coming everyone !!! (if anyone can do a thread on advice in collecting these, what to look for in good and bad...any little tip's, preservation also....do you clean them at all i.e soap and water and if really tarnished anything more drastic other than dreaded shiny brasso, to retain a dull older look but cleans it up. I came out in 2000 of the regular forces, but I'd imagine they were out there too, they are the Challenger big boys lot !! I think it's the same, but has a cloth backing perhaps or the colour of their beret has changed or something....there was some contention over something LOL !!! I think the regimantal crest has two Lance's eminating from it, when that came in to fruition god knows, that could have in 1922 even ? It's odd, I'm an ex regular soldier and in all 16 years in the Brit forces in some capacity and I know nothing of my armies traditions history etc etc I've just started recollecting Brit cap badges and given up on German awards for a unknown duration (money etc etc German stuff has just gone over the top) Yeah this is one smart cap badge, a sort of 'we mean business', no crowns or latin either.......it looks ruddy smart !!!
