Hungary Hungarian People's Republic Awards
KeithB replied to Ed_Haynes's topic in Central & Eastern European States
I have three more. I don't have any books that cover Hungarian awards, and while I wrote down exactly what they were I can't seem to locate it. If anybody wants to name these I would be appreciative. I do remember the first two are labor, and the third is military but beyond that I am drawing a blank. #1 -

Hello. I was hoping someone here could help me identify the meanings of the silver hallmarks on my Order of the White Rose. The only mark which I can identify is the final one, the 'P.5'. I understand that it indicates a date of manufacture of 1920. Thank You in advance. The first is just the medal itself.

The bidding on this bar went a little bit crazy after I posted this question here. In case anybody is interested in it, I emailed the seller asking if it had all four hooks and this was the response: a fact the seller conveniently leaves out of the posting. And thank you, wildcard, for the response. It was very much appreciated. I have a bar with a Luitpold medal on it so I should have recognised the ribbon. I do not know, however, what the criteria were for being awarded one or the other. If could talk a little offhand about the medal and the cross and what the criteria for their being awarded I would appreciate it.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...A%3AIT&rd=1 I came across this medal bar and I would like to figure out what is going on here. I am mostly attracted to the bar because of the lifesaving medal, but generally I'm out of my league. I can tell that the King Ludwig Cross is in the wrong place but that is about it. What belongs in the first two spots? Is the lifesaving medal on the correct ribbon? I'm sorry but there aren't good photos of the back. The seller hasn't included any and I'm wondering if the hook for the Ludwig Cross is broken off and that's why it's misplaced... But if anybody is up to some general discussion of this bar I would appreciate it.

Just a clarification - modern Turkish uses a Roman alphabet and has a bunch of 'reforms' added on, so you would have to find someone who speaks Ottoman Turkish which on the face would seem to be much more difficult than just finding someone who can read Turkish. Unfortunately I don't know anybody who speaks either, so I can't help you. Sorry.

Imperial Russia Milit?r Maria Theresien Orden Bruststern on eBay?
KeithB replied to KeithB's topic in Russia: Imperial
Thanks for the response. -
First this is a beautiful bar. But the location of the Hanseatic Cross and the Zahringer Lion it bothering me to no end. It would seem that the natural place to put it would be either after the Red Eagle while at the same time moving the Zahringer Lion up, or behind the Lion. In other words I would think it would either be all Prussian awards followed by the others, or Iron Cross followed by actual orders followed by bravery/merit with the long service and commemoratives at the end. Can anybody explain for my simple mind why it was done this way? It goes without saying that there are better people to answer this, but the Iron Cross is on a combatant?s ribbon. I wouldn't think that an administrator or many of the other unexciting possibilities would qualify for that.

Waldek Golden Merit Medal, but the swords which are attached are silver in color. In every reference photo I have found the swords are always golden. Above the silver swords is the expected golden-colored ring. I would appreciate opinions as to whether the swords could be original to the medal or whether this one has been messed with. Thanks in advance, Keith

EK 1870 Opinions on an '1870' EK1...
KeithB replied to KeithB's topic in Germany: All Eras: The Iron Cross
Hi. Thanks for both of the replies. It was never sold as an original 1870 piece and was purchased at a discount relative to an original, so the fact that it is not original is ok. I did a size comparison with my lone '39 EK1 and it is a perfect match. I think I am going to post a couple of photos of where the frames come together because it almost looks like someone may have taken a '39 cross, removed and replaced the core, and resoldered it. There are some somewhat deep indentations as if it wasn't put back together tightly. Has anybody ever seen/heard of anybody doing this sort of thing? In any case I think I'm stuck with it. -
Hello. Until recently I had been under the mistaken impression that well known auction houses with distinguished reputations would be more knowledgeable and honest about items that pass through their gates. Of course I have been proved wrong. Disillusionment is setting in and I am beginning to question everything I own. This item was purchased from a well known Hamburg auction house with the same initial as the city where it is located. It was purchased as an 1870 cross that was made in the 1920's, but now that I doubt the source I get bad feelings on several fronts. Of course that might just as well be paranoia. Opinions appreciated. Please let me know if better/different pictures are required. Thank You.

Hello. I have a cigarette card book (not the most scientific source) from 1932 called Reedereiflaggen der Welthandelsflotte or House flags of the world trade fleet and I thought this might be my only chance in life to use this book for something useful. The book lists 126 different German shipping companies and 396 international shipping companies and shows their flags. By the time this book was made, there was not a German shipping company with the initials DS in their names. DS often appears in the names of companies as Dampfschiffsreederei or Steam ship shipping company, but those letters alone on a dagger would make no sense. The closest I could come to matching DS were company names starting with S. These would be "Seefahrt" Dampfschiffreederei and Stettiner Dampschiffs-Gesellsch. The only company I could find in the entire book with the initials "DS" was the Greek company D.A. Stathos S. S. Co. of Athens which did operate in German waters. Their flag, however, only showed the letter S, not DS. So the initials are either for a company that went out of business before 1932, or they are not the initials of a large German shipping company. Not much help, but it is something.

Hello. This medal came to me in a collection of Austro-Hungarian medals (although I guess at that point they were still 'The Holy Roman Empire'.) Based on the inscriptions I understand what it is for, but I am a bit confused about it's origin. I was under the impression that Suvarov was hung out to dry by the Austrians so I may be wrong about where it came from? The inscription on the front reads: "Alex Wassiliewitch Comte de Souwrowe" at the bottom the engraver's (?) name reads "IEITO" The reverse reads: "zum denkmal seiner siege in italien" and it is dated 1799 at the bottom. If anybody can tell me anything about it I would be grateful. Thanks in advance!

Finland Harun-el-Raschid Hintersatz: Finnish Muslim
KeithB replied to panzercomander's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
I thought I'd add a photo of the Order of the White Rose because from afar they don't look particularly interesting. Once you get up close, however, it is much more interesting. I am absolutely enthralled by the design of the lions with the swords and their tongues sticking out. -
Austria-Hungary Franz Joseph Commemorative Cross
KeithB replied to Riley1965's topic in Austro-Hungarian Empire
Hello. Here is one variation that has not been posted - the version with the ribbon for court officials.
