Hello all, I'm looking for any and all information regarding Freiherr v. Schimmelmann. So far what I know is that we was awarded the Pour le Merite and he is one of just two individuals, the other being Alexander von Falkenhausen, to be awarded the Oldenburg Haus und Verdienstorden Ritterkreuz I klasse mit Schwertern und Lorbeer. A real mouthfull I know. The majority of the information that I had been able to gather comes from IR 91 Oberlt. Gert Pflugrat's book: “Das Offizierkorps des Oldbg. IR 91 während des Weltkrieges 1914/18” What my main hope is, is to compile a complete list of Freiherr von Schimmelman's ranks, regiments, awards, and especially, a picture of the man. Being a winner of the Pour le Merite, I figured that this shouldn't be to difficult; However, I haven't been successful. This is what I have so far: Oberstleutnant (a. D.) Maybe @Solomon may be of some service in that department. A simple search of his name states that he authored a regimental history of Infanterie-Regiment Prinz Friedrich der Niederlande (2. Westfälisches) Nr.15 for its centenary in 1913 and he was a Hauptmann and a Kompagnie-Cheif of the regiment. - If this information is determined to be correct, could it be possible he was awarded with a Dutch award? Further, according to The Axis History Forum user "Mjölnir", writes that Major Freiherr von Schimmelmann, when awarded the Pour Le Merite, was attached to I.R. 394, an Ersatz Regiment for I.R. 163 - The duration of his time attached to I.R. 394 would be greatly appreciated. Very nice! Is this an example of what a salesman would have in his shop? Similar to the samples of award ribbons? I know the Kingdom of Württemberg also had their own unique passanten, thus the next logical question to be asked is, what other German States had their own unique passanten. I can assume that the Grand Dukedoms, Duchies, and principalities all used the Prussian passanten, however, the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin has been know to have their own rules and unique uniform pieces that where adhered too, was this another example of this? I know that paradeschärpes where often unique to their state, was this also the case? Regards

If it is the PLM, was he taken out of retirement to serve in the Great War, thus possibly when he was awarded it? Thank you @Simius Rex and others for your valued input, it is greatly appreciated. As it was I who first shared my items and causing this uproar, I would still like to convey my apologies for what some may call careless forethought. As already previously stated by myself, it was never my intention to deceive the community or any other joining parties. It cannot be denied, as the this and the thread Sismus linked clearly displays the problems prevalent in collecting. There is no doubt that these forgeries are whole heartedly unacceptable and should be publicized as a warning against people practically throwing away their hard earned money as well as disrupting the pool of authentic items. Perhaps I’m writing this for self justification and comfort, but I never intend to sell this bar, and although it has already been stated that it is seriously looked down upon, I bought it for my own semi-preservation of history, thinking that this would be a perfect compliment to the ribbon bar, but perhaps I was seriously mistaken, in which case I am more than willing to take such responsibility. All I want is nothing more than to forget my mistake, and appreciate the pieces I was able to give a collective, safe, and proper home, and, although due to such actions most unlikely, to have the possible compliments of those in the community regarding these Oldenburg pieces, and appreciate the history that they represent. All I wanted to do was to appreciate Oldenburg History, not unappreciatively and ignorantly destroy it. I only want to build bridges, not burn them. Best Regards.

I don’t think this is the case at all. For instance, when the medals where awarded to an enlisted man, NCO, or officer, they where awarded as a single decoration, not mounted. It was the at the digression of the awardee to have their awards mounted, and thus, depending upon how much or little they had or wanted to pay, determined the quality and style of their medal mounting.

@laurentius that’s exactly what I had figured, and that’s what I still conclude. However, probably mistakingly, every single officer listed in Obrlt. Pflugradt’s book who was awarded the Friedrich August Kreuz ii klasse is awarded it with the spange, despite clear and concrete photographic and textual evidence saying otherwise. Perhaps it was just easier to print “OF2 Sp.” but we’ll never know.

Gert Pflugradt which he provides all the awards, number of wounds, ranks and the regiments they where apart of during the duration of the war. @Triadoro, @lew, and others, thank you all for your fair and valued responses. The story of my relative giving me the ribbon bar was of no fabrication, I didn’t know they purchased it from Weitze, but it makes sense. It was after it was gifted to me I began to search for individual pieces that corresponded to the bar; although now my word rightfully so may have lost much of its merit, none of the medals were stripped off of any existing bars as many times awards have been dealt with and separated many times. In hopes of not causing anymore “hoodwinking”, “fooling”, or otherwise, I ask what should be done about the bar? Should it be disassembled, divided up and sold? Any degree of recommendation would be most appreciated @VtwinVince, I regret that my apology was long winded, and that it all came across as ridiculous. Although a further note of regret may not in anyway repair the situation, I hope that it may not come across as ludicrous to hope that, some form of repentance may not cause what has happened to be forgotten, but possibly lead to my actions forgiveness. I know that my name is most likely forever tarnished, I still hope that, even through some means of retribution and repentance, i may still be apart of this community. Regards.

@Triadoro, I don’t know what I should do. Theres no justification or explanation that could possibly help. Your thoughts and words, although harsh, are very fair, and I can’t help but hold the opinions of collectors like yourself in the highest utmost regard. The ribbon bar was given to me as a gift from a relative who recently passed, and thinking I could honor this gift, I erroneously assumed that such a gathering wouldn’t be harmful as I incorrectly convinced myself that it would be better to unite these pieces rather than having them be separated and potentially lost to history, which now, may have been a better alternative. I never intended to be the source of deceit and lies. How should I proceed or attempt to provide retribution. I feel as though I sinned against God and I must repent for my wrong doings. I feel sick that now forger is associated with my once clean name. Please, I will do anything that you or others recommend I should do, even so much as destroying the bar. Even though this may be a luck luster attempt for an explanation and an apology, I hope to perhaps repair any harm and damage that’s been done. Regards.

@1812 OvertureThe reason he was awarded the Austrian Maltese Order was because, as evident by IR 91’s commander, Ernst von Höhnhorst, and his adjutant, Gert von Pflugradt both being awarded the Austrian Militarverdienstkreuz. Austria awarded many decorations to many German soldiers and officers that fought with them, and this man, who was ostensibly a Catholic, was awarded the Austrian Maltese Order during his time fighting in Galicia and part of Romania during the war.
