Hi all , What do you think about this one? Bought it recently and I´m wondering what I see ?? Preussen Merit Cross for war aid- Honor Cross for non fighter - Preuss Crown Order IV ( or Crown medal ? ) - Saxe Ernestine HO Merit medal- White Falcon Merit Cross ? Backside is dark blue Christer

After a little bit of research online I counted the following numbers for Sachsen Altenburg Goldene Verdenstmedaliie 1871-1891 351 awarded with dates and another 58 that could have been awarded during this period. So a total of max about 400 awarded. 1871-16 1875 - 16 1879 - 8 1883 - 7 1887 - 26 1872 - 18 1876 - 17 1880 - 15 1884 - 22 1888 - 1 1873- 17 1877 - 19 1881 - 19 1885 - 27 1889 - 3 1874 - 12 1878 - 42 1882 - 20 1886 - 32 1890 - 2 1891 - 3 seems that about 20 yearly was quite normal and going down the last years before the new version come in 1892. Som new info !! I found out that the medals was awarded to someone from Sweden and has been here since then..... There was only 3 ! People from Sweden that got the Sachsen Altenburg Verdienstmedallie and all three had a close connection to both Sweden and Sachsen Alt through this woman She is Prinzess Therese von Sachsen Altenburg , frau Herzogin von Dalkarlien (after her husband died in 1873) She was married in 1864 to Prince August of Sweden and lived in Stockholm for many years to her death in 1914. November 29th 1886 three Swedish got the Goldene Verdienstmedallie Hoflakei I Johnsson , Stallmeister L Johansson and Zweiter Kammardiener F Th Bjorklund I´m quuite sure my medals had belong to one of those three. The problem is that these names are really common in Sweden , but I will se if I can get some more info since they worked at the Royal Court. Christer

Today they arrived and I was very impressed by the condition of the boxes first ! They look almost perfect First the Anhalt box then the Sachsen Altenburg with its makers label But the BIG suprise was when I cleaned them..... The Anhalt is the Goldene Verdienstmedallie ! ( Bronze vergoldet) and the Sachsen is also the Goldene Verdienstmedallie (Silver vergoldet) Wow , it really made my weekend , here are tthey together with a Swedish Silver medal I also got today ... Thanks , The funny thing is that I didn´t really know anything about them and thought maybe I was bidding to much German Imperial medals and stuff is not very popular in Sweden, I´m one of the few that collect 1872-1918 , the later period in contrast 1933-1945 has stupid prices and collectors buy all kind of fakes and worthless crap ..... Know I have to learn more about the Sachsen Altenburg/Meinigen/Coburg Merit medals ..... Go them , but they didn´t come cheap .... 71 Euro for the Anhalt Merit Medal and 120 fot the Sachsen one . Hopefully its still a good buy? More pics when they arrive Christer

Three More ! Now 29 names out of 58 .. Capt Johan Adolf LIlliesköld ( Knigh of the Order of the Lion ) and Lt Knut Gustaf Stålhandske (1898-1900) Knut Gustaf Stålhandske was also in German service 1914-1918 ( Maj ) . Capt Sten Edward Gleerup (1883-1886) Coming closer to have all the names I also found out that about 200 officers where from Norway... Sten Edward Gleerup

After some research I found out more about Swedish Ofiicers in Congo. 1883-1902 there was 44 Swedish officers who went to Congo and not less then 22 died there.or short after coming home. It seems that a total of 58 Swdish military pesonal was in Congo so the number of awards must be few. Found some more ! Kongo awards was´t very common to Swedish officers what I can see . I now found two officers with awards from Kongo Maj Arvid Wester born 1856 he got the l´Etoile de Service medal and Capt Peter Glimstedt born 1871 he got the I´Etoile de Service and Kongo Lion Order Gold Medal , I will check if I find anything else Christer

Hi again Kvart , I was a little interested after my last post so I started to look closer on the two Swedish officers and found ..... No one of them got the Lion Order at all .... The first info I got was totally wrong , they both got the Leopold Order , not the Lion Order. But now I got really interested so I will look more and come back here when I find someone who really got the Lion Order .... Best regards Christer

Yes it looks much better in " real life" I have seen this postcard before and its really from the 1950s so well before all computers I found on the internet that there is some articles written about him in different old books but I have to find them to know more. It can of course be an old joke and he just borrowed a HHO to looks cooler A mysterie that need an answer ..... Christer

This card landed in my mailbox yesterday It shows a Swedish Ship Captain Johan Ernfrid Österman , age 89 1950 så born 1861 He has the Swedish Queen Victoria Gold Medal and a Hohenzollern House Order ... What could lead to a civilian Swedish sailor get this order. Any thoughts ? I haven´t found anything yet on him on the net , but keep on looking. Christer

Hi Richard , It look like you have a lot of info already about the two soldiers , but maybe I can add something more . The Bravery medal you are mention is the only Bravery medal in Sweden : Instituted 1789 by Gustv III , King of Sweden It was first in Silver only given to enlisted men and later also in Gold for Officers . During the Russian war 1788-1790 i was awarded about 1900 medals but Carl Gadd wasn´t born until 1784 so he probably won his medal in the war 1805-1807 or 1808-1809. There was approx 1300 medals awarded for those wars. After 1814 few Bravery medals was awarded , one number stated is 32 between 1814-1920 What I can find out there is no official list of all awarded medals ? I shall see if I can find some info. Hi , I been looking for any info of Swedish officers awarded the Order of the African Star but I can´t find anything... The Order of the Lion has been awarded to some Swedish officers but thats the only connection I found so far Maj Carl Alfred Murray Knight LO and Col Pehr Hasselrot Officer LO are two examples . Hi Mervyn , No Valentiner managed to keep out of prison and after 1933 he was safe in Germany. He survived WW2 but I suppose no one cared about hes eventually first world war crimes then , they had new ones to think about . And here he is with a lot of awards !

A new ship in the long list.... S/S Ancona was built in 1908 in the Belfast wharf , workman , Clark & Co Ltd. She was owned by a Italian company and travelled between New York and Naples . A quite beautiful ship at 8210 grt . 8th of November 1918 she was sailing from Messina to New York when the submarine SM U-38 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Max Valentiner torpedo her and she sank with the lost of almost 200 lives. Most of the people ombord was Greek and Italian emigrants going to the US. Some sources say there was 507 ombord other states 446 (including 163 crew) 1 US passanger survived the sinking Dr Cecil Grid. This led to a diplomatic crise since 9 or 11 ( numbers unclear) US citizens died in the sinking and furthermore Germany was not at war with italy in this time and the sub was sailing under Austria-Hungary flag in spite it was aGerman Submarine. Max Valentiner who was the highest ranking U-boat Ace during WW1 , was branded as awar criminal by the allies , for fifteen different incidents during the war. He managed to stay out of prison and joined the Kriegsmarine in WW2 , in 1949 he died by a lung disease maybe due to the toxic wapours he inhaled from the Uboat engines during first world war. He citims got their revenge in a strange way ....

Yes , When You have he birthdate its easy Hes mothers name was Anna born Heilmeier , he joined the Army Oct 16th 1896 , He got MVK I x , China Denk Münze , Leopold Med , DA 3 , and RM ?? Could only find one post with him , sometimes there could be several from different units Christer
