    1. True, but isn't this more relevant when things are centrally produced than when (for example, Geman ODM) they are made by any old jeweler with no particular concern for details and specifications beyond general appearance.
    2. Complete agreement. And I think this applies to all sub-areas of the wider forum. The idea is for us all to learn, not just to grant self-important unsupported Olympian judgments and feel better about the size of our expertise. The only potential problem is that while we all learn, the fake-makers have the chance to learn too. That is a risk we ought to be prepared to take, I think. They day you stop learning, you aren't what is called an "expert", you are what is called "dead".
    3. And, finally, one of the the most evocative groups I have (he was there when everything happened): Captain Vladimir Vasilievich Kulishenko http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=20951
    4. Major Vladimir Fedorovich Dubrovin See: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=3222
    5. Colonel Vasily Terent?evich Belykh http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=4150
    6. Let me add a few Soviet groups, shown elsewhere but nice to see a dedicated thread. David Mironovich Sup'yan (The campaign medals are display "restorations".) http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=3728
    7. Oh, OK, German. Thought it might have been Hindi or Urdu. This isn't a uniquely Teutonic forum, after all. Sorry I can't help, as my German has whithered as other languages have replaced it.
    8. Some may think us crazy for research "only" an awards book. But what do THEY know, OoV. Go for it!! Squeeze out all that history!
    9. "Putinia" . . . I like that . . . . As in "Rule, Putinia" . . . ??? Some close-ups of mine (with some tweaking for contrast).
    10. Let me see what I can find. Should be interesting. Any chance of pictures?
    11. Interesting. Thanks, Bob. Good to see that the talked-about revisions in the honors system are slow in coming, as the SB will be a likely casualty as phaleristic (and other) history gets erased. The box doesn't look much different from the old ones, but it would be interesting to see if this were a nice pinback one or a nasty-brassy ugly SB. I'd bet on the former.
    12. Interesting question, but I am not very clear as to what you are asking. Sorry. Sometimes I confuse easily. Are you interested in: 1- Local (Egyptian/Sudanese) troops who fought with the British against their countrymen. or 2- The Egyptian/Sudanese troops that opposed the British invasions? or 3- Both. or 4- Something else.
    13. That would be my guess, but why the medal and not the order? Not way to be sure without checking the records, and as all foreign awards required approval, that record is usually there. Also, I think is medals are in the NAM. With the VC, it would be easy enough to check their location.
    14. Short version: The silver one (whitre and green ribbon, scalloped edge) is connected to the order, the bronze gilt one (red and green ribbon) is a commemorative medal for the reign of Muhammad Ali. Does this make sense?
    15. Wow. Nice! Thanks! Gotta squint some at the ribbons. Those quirky spectrum shifts!
    16. Lovely stuff, everybody. Thanks! Can we have a close-up on that last lovely lady with the ribbons and the badge, please . . . . Images of these badges in wear are scarce.
    17. finally (finally!!) There's other stuff (autobiographies and so on), but this is (more than?!) enough.
