Hello, I think the right caption is 162 au jus et la fuite pour la 27/2. Young people were belonging to an age group, named "la classe", 20 years after their birth, and then incorporated every peers month. Talking about his National Service, a young French said "I belong to the 27/2 class" (j'appartiens à la classe 27/2) meaning: "I have done my National Service in 1927 and have been incorporated in February (or maybe in the second wave, in April)". I confirm that it is the Medaille comm?morative d'Indochine (Indochina Service Medal), which is different from the Colonial Medal. The two claps are unofficial: it exists no claps for this medal. Noir 7

I would add that it isn't totally right. In some case, and specially in military affairs, the State still offers the medals: for example, my bronze National Defense Medal and the Commemorative Medal were given. But I had ton paid other medals (silver and gold National Defense Medal, Nation's Gratitude Medal...). I think that War Crosses, Valour Crosses, are offered and Military Medal and Legion of Honour too when they are given for an bravey action. Yours Noir 7

"Promotion du Tchad": in the tradition of Saint Cyr, each class receives a name, the class-name or "nom de promotion". The "1900-1902 class" received the name "Tchad" or "Chad" in english, because this territory became definitively French at this period. Today, the name is chosen at the ministery level among three proposal of the class and are more often heroes, but could be an event too (for example in 2002 "Bicentenary" of the school).

Born in 1920, he could have joined the foreign legion since ~1937 (even if he would not have been very old...) so before the war. @Camerone54: units did not participate in active fighting only in Nord-Africa, Syria or Europe. He could have fought in Ethiopia against Italian in 1941 or in Indochina against Japanese (but in this case, I am ot sure he would have received the bar "Liberation").

It's the badge of a french cavalry and recce regiment of the "arm?e d'Afrique": 3? r?giment de spahis alg?riens (~3rd Algerians Spahis Regiment), which was called from 1945 to 1946 "3? r?giment de spahis alg?riens de reconnaissance" (~3rd Algerians Recce Spahis Regiment). In the "spahis", most of the officiers and NCOs were French and the majority of the troopers were indigenous (from Algeria, Tunisia or Marocco: they were in different regiments). -
Hi, it's a very nice document... and an exception. I have checked today the decision that organised the "croix de guerre 1914-1918" (d?cret du 23 avril 1915), and the battalion level doesn't exist! Normally, this leutnant should have receive a regimental level mention. Best

No, those people received a citation at regimental level (or above...) (for example for the "bataillons de chasseurs ? pied"). Noir 7
