    1. Hello! Then we have another question. Did the french fly through english operation zones? If not, the photo might have been taken south of Amiens up to the Alsace front. Because the altitude is 3000m, such a big trench system might be close to the front
    2. Ah. Ok. Thank you! But the photo is from 1916. So probably french.
    3. Hello Spasm! What do you mean with "Shermans"? Germans? Hmmm, I´m german, but we didn´t write "Month/Day/Year"...
    4. Hello! The english would write 7-29-16, wouldn´t they? And germans would write the "One" as a "1" and not as a "I" Probably it was taken by french?
    5. That´s strange. First I thought it was a brand new tunic with brand new shoulder straps. But why should one fix shoulderstraps and sow the numbers on later? Probably it´s a tunic from a theatre or a movie production company? (That could happen, if the ain´t no stamps in the inside!) In a lot of movies or documentaries you won´t see a number upon the shoulder straps!
    6. Hello Bernhard But now I think it´s Gremmels. Why should he write two different "r´s"??? Gremmels is a popular name in that area! http://www.verwandt.de/karten/absolut/gremmels.html
    7. Hello Shawn! But you asked for the units... Here is a list of all units, engaged in april at Arras, especially the heavy artillery. You see the changing of divisions, but I don´t know, if any artillery had been changed too. Heavy artillery didn´t belong to the divisions, but to the army (6th army). If you can´t read the german language, lt me know. In this case important: Seit = Since Bis = until
    8. Hello Shawn! I don´t know, which artillery units were attached to each regiment, but I have a composition of the entire artillery of the battle of Arras. (Vimy was a part of that battle). Interesting for you the first line (6th army, Gruppe Vimy)
    9. Hello! Very nice! In 1879 Major v. Rantzau was commander of II.Btl. of that regiment, and in 1883 he was à la suite in that regiment and commanded the Infanterie-Lehr-Bataillon
    10. Hi Mattyboy! Coluld it be a K instead of an R? Sächsische Kriegsverdienst-Medaille?
    11. A good question. Chris, how could you know, he hadn´t been in frontline with 442? Could you please show the entire document? I can´t see a date, when he awarded the IC. His units were: 1.7.18 (IR 442): 231.Inf.Div. (Avocourt/Verdun until august 7, 1918) Since 3.8.18 Garde-Gren.Rgt.3 (maybe Ersatz-Btl.): 5.Garde-Inf,.Div. (Marne, Aisne-Ailettes, Argonne, Woevre)
    12. Hello Chris! What about "Mitgemachte Gefechte"? Is it crossed-out or is there just nothing written? That´s a differecet. Sometimes in early 1919 they didn´t had any official infos about his battles. He could have recieved the EK since july 1918, when he served with the 442
    13. K.K.240 means Kraftfahr-Kolonne 240. This Supply-column was listed in the 11th army
    14. No, the ranklists only mention the second name, the medals and the promotion of his last rank. I did find a Lt. Schwab in Fußart.Rgt.13 (ranklist 1909) Promotion (called: Patent) 18.11.06. With this date we can follow his career. Rank list 1911: like 1909 Rank list 1912: like 1909, with comment: "kommandiert zur Militärtechnischen Akademie" (commandet to military-technical academy) Rank list 1913: Leutnant in Lehr-Regiment of Fußartillerie Schießschule Rank list 1914: like 1913 with comment: kommandiert zur Dienstleistung beim Flieger-Bataillon 1 (commanded to duty at Aviation-Bataillon 1) Stellenbesetzung 1919: promoted to Hauptmann 18.8.16 Honour-Ranklist: Lehr-Regiment (Fußart.Schießschule), comment: after armistice Major a.D. (außer Dienst = off duty), later in Reichsheer Rank list 1920: Hauptmann in Art.Rgt.5 (comment: before: K.K.240 (I don´t know what that means...) In Fußart.Rgt.13 I found a Leutnant Walter (Rank list 1914), promotion 22.11.08. Is that your man?
    15. Hi Gunnar! Ah, ok. 1907... I checked the later ranklists. So he will have stopped his career before the war and he was re-activated by mobilization. The honour ranklist does not mention any places of birth
    16. Do you know, when he joined FuAR13? The ranklist of honour doesn´t mention him there.
    17. The it will be a Reserve-officer or an officer, who promoted during the war. I couldn´t find a Schwab in the Ehrenrangliste, who was in an avaiation unit
    18. Ah, ok.Thank you. Unfortunately I don´t have any info about commanders of that unit: http://www.frontflieger.de/2-faa223.html
    19. Hello! It would be easier, if you would show us the unit... Abt-Führer. From what?
    20. Dave was right in correcting me. It´s not Sütterling... my fault. But I don´t even know, why those writers chosed to write both systems. I can´t recognize any sense...
