Chris Boonzaier Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Some 3rd Jäger... the 2 Blue militärpass joined in 1916...
Chip Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Chris, What is the name on the officer's Sterbebild and his date of death? Nice passes. I have two from the regiment. Interesting that Grühle became a Feldhilfsarzt in 1918. Chip
Chris Boonzaier Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Hi, Gruhle was a medical student before the war and was with the Ski battalion basically from day one, did the whole Vogesen thing, then Tirol, then in December 1915 during the advance in Serbia he had stomache sickness and feet (I assume frostbite?) . By January 1916 he was in Münich and spent the rest of the war working in Hospitals becoming a Feldhilsarzt. Of course I would have liked Verdun in there somewhere,. but the veeery early stuff is nice as well ;-) Will look up the officer today when I get a moment.. need to find the card
Hoss Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Hi Does anyone have a period picture of the Rucksack these soldiers wore preferably Bavarian I'm also translating the Kraus book bit by bit. There are so many variants of that 'style' always found it confusing the Kraus diagrams don't help most look to be done in freehand. Anyone? Regards Eric
Chip Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Eric, I've got some pictures of original rucksacks, from various sites on the Internet. As you say, there doesn't seem to be one standard pattern. I have one example in my collection. It is not unit marked, but there is a leather goods manufacturer's stamp and a wartime date. Chip
Chip Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Thanks Chris, Once I had the date, I realized that I have seen this SB before. I have it marked in my unit history. I put a little pencil "tic" mark by every example from the regiment that I have seen. That's a particularly nice one, for a fellow that obviously served in the regiment from 1915 until he was killed, only a month before the armistice. Chip
Chip Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Good work on this last one Chris. His card gives the 5.Jäger Rgt., which is an error. The picture gives it away, but you can check the Ehrentafel to confirm and he is there. Chip
Hoss Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) Gents Found this cool picture at rest but no idea on the unit btw what is the German name for those long staffs the boys walked with I wonder today how many are out there? Cheers Eric oops sorry about the other pic, me fingers slipped. Edited March 23, 2014 by Hoss
Chip Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Eric, I think it was called a "Bergstock". I like that other photo from the 3.Jäg.Rgt. Chip
Hoss Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Thanks Chip wonder what the history is in some photos they look wonderfully made, almost traditional for want of a better term. Eric
Chris Boonzaier Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Just picked up this framed Photo of a guy from the 2nd Bavarian Jäger Battalion. From the other 2 i have seen, these were wartime, bought by the men for the family back home, a standard print with the guys face stuck on it... USUALLY the top has "Weltkrieg 1914-15" and the bottom has the guys name and 2nd bavarian jäger Battalion... In this case some idiot trimmed it, removed the name so it could fit in the frame.....
Hoss Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Gents Found this interesting link in me wanderings. Chip is that right the Alpenkorps didn't come into being until oct/nov 1914? I never knew that if correct. http://www.denkmalprojekt.org/2010/vl_jaeger-reg_nr_3_wk1.htm Eric
Chris Boonzaier Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Hi, I think it was May 1915? Best Chrs
Hoss Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Found this on-line Chris where's the Chipster? turkey poisoning? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpenkorps_%28German_Empire%29 this being the case we missed its centennial. Eric
Chip Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Eric, I think Chris is correct, in that the Alpenkorps was formed at about the same time that the 3.Jäger Regiment was formed from the four Schneeschuh Batls. (May 1915).
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Here is a nice study with an Edelweiss
Chip Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 (edited) Chris,That is interesting! Some non-regulation company numbers or the regimental number I guess.Chip Edited January 10, 2015 by Chip
The Prussian Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Hello! No. The 3 stands for III.Bataillon. I´ve read that somewhere, but I did forget where...
Chip Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 That's a possibility too, since they are wearing the Prussian cap Kokarde. Bavarians were in the I. and IV. battalions.Chip
Chris Boonzaier Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 I remember reading somewhere that for a period (I think in the Tirol) that the 3rd were supposed to remove the collar tabs? Does anyone have any reference to that? Thanks Chris
