deptfordboy Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Hi All, I picked this up a few days ago. It's 'just' a Red Star, but is way below any other numbers I have up til now. From the excellent resources on this site, I think the number places it in early 1943, so perhaps research will show that the recipient saw some action. Cheers Gilbert
deptfordboy Posted February 10, 2007 Author Posted February 10, 2007 And a shot of the reverse. Mcdaniel and Schmitt have this down as a Type 2, early Monetny Dvor with a screwpost base, if I have read the signs correctly. The thread on the screwpost seems to have been deliberately stripped and 'waisted', perhaps by the recipient to stop it coming off with wear?G
Gerd Becker Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 I think, its earlier than 1943, probably a Mid to End 1942 award. Nice piece, Gilbert. I would definately recommend to get it researched, as these early Red Stars are allways interesting.Gerd
Guest Rick Research Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 My favorite type of Red Star! I agree with Gerd-- this is most likely an October-November 1942 one and ANYTHING pre-relief of Stalingrad is likely to have a citation much better than later ones.
Paul R Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 A nice low number!!! I can hardly wait to see what the research uncovers!paul
deptfordboy Posted February 12, 2007 Author Posted February 12, 2007 Thanks Guys, I was pleased to get it, as all my others are 6 digits at least. Naturally I'll share the results of research on the forum. Cheers Gilbert
Mondvor Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 (edited) As far as I can see, the number is 98.XXX. So it is a 1943 award. It was issued sometime between December 1942 and March 1943, but bestowed to the cavalier in the period from February to May 1943. Well, make a research and you will find out the truth Edited February 12, 2007 by Mondvor
deptfordboy Posted February 16, 2007 Author Posted February 16, 2007 Thanks Mondvor, the number is 68121 it's just the picture doesn't show that too clearly. Gilbert
Belaruski Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 A good find Gilbert! Can you show a close up of the modified screwpost?I'm intrigued!I'm trying to work out why that would have been done.
Mondvor Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Thanks Mondvor, the number is 68121 it's just the picture doesn't show that too clearly. GilbertOK, in this case it is August - November 1942 award.
