I've always loved trains, subways and such and hope to add more from these areas to my collection at some point down the road.

Rich, I have to say that it's a bit hard nowadays to find a railways star here in Russia. And they cost alot.

I haven't seen them even at the club-sale of militaria collectors (AKA The Club, which takes place every saturday in one of our local DKs - Dom Kultury - Culture House).

I have never seen one actually for sale myself.... The one that I have shown I aquired by chance in a generous swap with our very own Stoo Belaruski.

Richie, interesting cap! The sequins are a very unusual touch! From my very limited experience of bullion embroiding they appear to have been added by hand with the original wire possibly removed. Or the whole badge could be a custom job for an individual. Very interesting though! Where do you find all of your furazhkas!?

You are probably right-on Stoo.

Just last night, after I posted it here of course like some kind of big shot, I showed this particular cap to some men in Russia. There is one who seems to be pretty up-and-up on Civil stuff. He wrote that the cap itself is A-OK, but the wings are an add on, and the star is not in its correct place. At least thst is how I understood it...

As I understand it the star ought to be on the crown if this a 70's or 80's cap.

However I think the visor itself is older than that.

I still think the badge is a modified one.

I'll show you a very interesting version of this cap tomorrow when the sun comes up!

here is a nice visor cap I have bought today. Initially I was thinking that it's a strange airforce cap due to the blue piping, but it also has the same material band as tankists - a black furlike thing.

Then at ww2 forum I was told that it is a VOSO - military communications service.

The order of 1932 which approved stars with a steam locomotive did not contain figure, therefore also stars a lot of different type. Per 1943 the new form has been entered, the form of 1932 have collected and have destroyed.

The visor itself is original. But it can be both from the beginning of 50-ies, or the end of 70-ies. At this time the colour of the visors was similar. But the sewn emblem "wheel with wings" at the crown of the visor cap - is not from this visor cap, it was established for railway service visor caps of the other time frames. And also was sewn onto the breast part of kitel of railway service uniform at 70-80-ies.

The star cocarde definitely?was?never?worn?at?the?crown?of?railway?service?visor?caps.

Also, the visor cap of VOSO I have posted - namely it requires the winged wheel atop of the crown and a star at the band.

Stewart, friend, the visor caps were and are the undetachable part of railroad uniforms.

uniform it is, militaristic or not, but it has the same common things as every uniform in the world.

Modern railroad service officials and workers do wear uniform, a bit different, but you always can see how does it look

I believe that the winged wheel part of the regulation is only for officers, so I feel that you can get away with completing your cap with a 30MM star to create an EM example.
