Dudeman Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Hi Dudeman,I'm unable (no knowledge enough...) to state on these points. But, I have a book including a small chapter on this subject : "History of the Russian State in Awards and Badges" by Nicolai Gladkov (2004). These badges are covered in the Volume 2, dedicated to Soviet Union. And it shows a Naval version of the ribbon / badge. This book is in Russian. My Russian is not good enough to allow a correct translation.Maybe a Russian speaking Member could help in summarizing what is said, and whether the way this point is dealt in this book could help or not ?Cheers.Ch.Pic : "History of the Russian State in Awards and Badges" by Nicolai Gladkov. Vol 2. (2004).There is nothing shedding light on the issue in the excerpts you posted. They tell of the establishment of the Guards title, distinguishing title for individuals, and the description of the distinguishing insignia for Ground Forces and Naval personnel.

Looking at the pictures, I thought this book could be of help...Cheers.Ch.
NavyFCO Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 This doesn't really apply to this thread, but in an effort to break the spiral of debating the finer points of Guards colors, here's a neat badge from my collection. Note the green verdigris down on the bottom of the badge...
NavyFCO Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Now why did I say to note that? Take a look at this photo. Note the same verdigris...
NavyFCO Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Now here's the photo of the original owner! This fellow was Lt Colonel Tolkachev. I love this photo of him, dated 1990. This is one of those groups that I'll go to the grave with. Dave
NavyFCO Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 The reverse of the photo. I almost tear up every time I read this and think about it. Here he is, a "war hero" and proud grandfather...
NavyFCO Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Here's Colonel Tolkachev in Vienna in 1946, presumably wearing the same Guards badge...
NavyFCO Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 One last photo (I have to resist the temptation to scan all of them!) Here he is in the middle of the photo at an awards ceremony in Germany, dated 1947... good chance he's wearing the same Guards badge as in the first scan... Dave
Paul R Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 Thanks Christophe! Dave,Awesome grouping! I have never seen another like it! What are the odds... very same badge along with a photo of it in wear 60 years earlier!

Bill Dienna Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 What does it say on the reverse of the photo????
HuliganRS Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 It says:For rememberance,Oleg, Lena, Ulianke from grandfather, Lt Colonel Aleksander ...Xarkov, March 1990

Dudeman Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 back...I am looking to get one from each of the Communist nations(or even post communist versions) that had them. I know only of the new Federal Russian version that is currently in use.If you are talking about badges currently in use, you would have to add Belarus (which you have) and Cuba (which you have) to the Russian Federation.
Paul R Posted January 27, 2006 Author Posted January 27, 2006 I need a Russian Federation version!!! Have you seen one of these on Ebay lately?Paul
