FOR VALOUR Posted August 5, 2008 Author Posted August 5, 2008 HELLO EDDIE, MANY THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY MOST HELPFUL,I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ON THIS GENTLEMAN.CAN I FIND CONFIRMATION OF HIS ENTITLEMENT TO THE BARS THE MEDAL CARRIES? BEST REGARDS DAVID
FOR VALOUR Posted August 5, 2008 Author Posted August 5, 2008 HELLO EDDIE, IT HAS THE FOLLOWING ORANGE FREE STATE/CAPE COLONY/1901/1902 REGARDS DAVID
Taz Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 David,Do you have reason to believe they do not belong on the Medal? It seems to be a normal selection of clasps.Cape ColonyStateTypeClasp11/10/1899 - 31/05/1902Not awarded if eligible for clasps for actions in Cape Colony or NatalOrange Free StateStateTypeClasp28/02/1900 - 31/05/1902Troops present within Orange River Colony and did not receive any other clasps for actions within the Orange River Colony.South Africa 1901DatetypeClasp1901Troops not eligible for the King's South Africa medal, although they had served at the front during 1901South Africa 1902DateTypeClasp1902Troops not eligible for the King's South Africa medal, although they had served at the front during 1902They were fighting in the areas denoted by the clasps. The Date type clasp was issued for the KSA Medal to personnel who were serving in South Africa on or after 1 January 1901 and who would have completed at least 18 months' service prior to 1 June 1902. Any service in South Africa during 1901 or 1902 that did not meet this criteria was recognised by the award of the appropriate date clasp to the Queen's South Africa Medal. This means he was not eligiable to recieve the KSA.Regards Eddie.
Michael Johnson Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 (edited) Gordon's (aka British Battles and Medals) used to have a chart of the usual medal entitlements of the IY.Some poking around seems to indicate that the 21st did not qualify for Transvaal. The fact that he has the South Africa 1902 clasp may indicate a transfer to another unit. Edited August 5, 2008 by Michael Johnson

Michael Johnson Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Wired date clasps are not unusual, as they were sent after the other clasps, and it was up to the recipient to attach them.

Michael Johnson Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 (edited) Also, clicking on the "Lo-Fi Version" label at the bottom of the screen will give you black text on a white background. The higher contrast may be more readable. Edited August 5, 2008 by Michael Johnson
Guest Rick Research Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 David: I have one eye, and share your vision difficulties. Brevity being something I am normally not guilty of was simply trying not to distract more than needed off topic. Rick

bigjarofwasps Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I recommend this book.....COOKE, John H.5,000 Miles with the Cheshire Yeomanry in South Africa. A Series of articles Compiled from Letters and Diaries Written By Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the 21st and 22nd (Cheshire) Companies of Imperial Yeomanry, .......http://www.vialibri.net/item_pg/1314237.htmIts not cheap mind about ?500+, but its well worth geting hold of.In addition to naming I think I`m right in saying that they didn`t start using the rank `Trooper` until later on in the war, the first drafts where ranked as Privates.
