And I also got his service record. It has some of the strangest handwriting I have seen in a long time.

Great documentation. I wish we knew what all those discharge paragraphs actually referred to. :( Despite the comments about 'health," it looks to me like he was simply turfed out as no-longer-needed, 5 years as a Senior Lieutenant and ground attack pilots were not what was wanted any more in the decade of long range nuclear bombing.

I always wish there was some way we could find out what these veterans did with the rest of their lives. What does a ground attack pilot DO, turned out at age 28?

You just have to ask :rolleyes:

    43. Увольнение командного и начальствующего состава из кадров РККА производится по выслуге сроков действительной военной службы (глава 6 настоящего Положения) и по болезни, а также может быть произведено:

    а) за невозможностью использования в связи с сокращением штатов или реорганизацией;

In few words... point "a" states that personell could be discharged due to the resizing of the Army or its Reorganization. A lot of soldiers have this on their Service Record.. It basically means.. once the was is over.. people were discharged.

    :cheers:

    Wonderful reference. Thanks!

These are dated 1935; were there any updates during/after the war? I've got a Service record that states the man was discharged due to "Paragraph D" in 1957. Unfortunately there isn't a para "D" in the doc.

Many thanks for this. Unless we understand the world in which these people lived (including the silly rules that governed their lives), we can't fully appreciate and decipher the meaning of these chunks of metal and ribbon.

Thanks for that! :beer: While I can read Russian that is posted HERE, my computer cannot view websites that are in Russian, so I can't go to Russian links. (Or Japanese or anything else that does not use the Roman alphabet....)

    This makes me wonder---

were the soulless bureaucrats actually trying to be KIND? Was "health"-- just maybe-- used as a mitigation for being thrown away as no longer useful? Might that have made the dismissed officer an "Invalid 3rd degree" or some such classification that MIGHT actually have gotten him some additional help in civil life-- priority for housing, or rations-- or any of the real benefits that went with veteran status there (so miserably absent HERE)....?

It just takes 10 years, right? But here is something to cheer up a fellow phalerist! :)

Here is the Red Star awarded to aerial gunner TSIRULNIKOV, who flew multiple mission with the pilot SHCHUKIN from 766ShAP!
F.ex. here (see image) they flew the mission on 21 Feb 1945 against the enemy concentration at Groß Blumenau (today Kremnevo) near Koenigsberg.

Two interesting airforce related awards! Imagine these were once flown on the same airplane !

These are the photos of aerial gunners training at 766ShAP.

And here is the regiment commander pilot HSU ERMILOV with the aerial gunners of the regiment. TSIRULNIKOV is among these men.
