Beau Newman Posted March 21, 2009 Share Posted March 21, 2009 I obtained this pair many years ago before I became aware of the scarcity of Saxe-Weimar groups. According to Neal O'Connors book on aviation awards, the Gold Merit Cross with Swords was only awarded 166 times between 1914 and 1919, of which 148 went to "natives". The same reference noted that the General Honor Decoration was awarded in fairly large numbers in the 3 grades, leading me to believe that any "native" recipient of the Merit Cross would have almost surely received the General Honor Decoration, as well. Is it possible that there was a very senior NCO or Warrant Officer rank that would have been eligible for the Merit Cross but was too senior for the General Honor Decoration? With only 168 awarded there is a high likelihood of crossing out many recipients who earned other awards, but I would guess that it wouldn't eliminate enough for an identification. Guest Rick Research Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 While ALL answers cannot be found in our Rolls Books, especially with Sachsen-Weimar's paucity of information ON its rolls..virtually all the recipients of the "GSF4aX" were Feldwebelleutnants. As such, they were ex-career NCOs who would have ALL had at the least a long service award not present on this bar. Of course a number might have had peacetime Gen Decs. An identification of this pair cannot be made BUT the number of potential suspects would be confined to Feldpost members (many of whom were likely ex-servicemen and could well have had peacetime awards of their own as "senior NCO" equivalents) orrrrrwar's duration Under-Surgeons who would not have had anything at all before the war. Several dozen possible, max. I continue to cry myself to sleep at night, hungry, while the Wonder Books Of The Future gather dust on my shelves. Once Daniel and I are dead and can no longer autograph copies in our respective continental sales territories, those of you who DO have them will really be able to cash in on the Too Rare Books after-market!
