TacHel Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 Either that or you are spending too much time with unissued ministerial medals P.S. Last time I saw the 4th class St.George cross issued for Englishman the asking price was $7500. This is a nice WW1 trio with a foreign award, but it's no George Cross. The medals market must be booming in Ukraine and Russia, I assure you it isn't in the west at the moment! You'd never see a starting price that high unless it included a few really high British awards.
JapanX Posted October 18, 2012 Author Posted October 18, 2012 (edited) Frank, there is no such thing as "western market for Russian awards" That's why wise dealers sell all heavy stuff inside Russia. But even at western market this set will cost a lot. You see Frank, there are a lot of high british awards around and very few 1st class "polnoves" for bravery, awarded to foreigners... JapanX Posted October 18, 2012 Author Posted October 18, 2012 ...but it's no George Cross. Indeed! It is much more rare award! ;)
paul wood Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Nothing like it would have made in the heady days of 2008 Paul
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 I dont think this would make USD7000 in the UK. Unless it is a Brit Gallentry award it would usually be in the "Ummm... interesting... but..." catagory.
JapanX Posted October 19, 2012 Author Posted October 19, 2012 I dont think this would make USD7000 in the UK. If you say so... Looks like you don't find Imperial Russia stuff too esoteric ... By the way, nice photo you posted Chris http://gmic.co.uk/index.php/topic/55819-navalwhat/page__st__20 It helps me no end!
JapanX Posted October 19, 2012 Author Posted October 19, 2012 Nothing like it would have made in the heady days of 2008 Paul "Edge of Sanity" days ... Bet you miss these days
paul wood Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Actually it would make $7000 problem free at one of the Russian weeks sales in London (a bit of advertising there). I don't actually miss the lunacy of 2008 a market like that is positively unhealthy, mind you it is still very strong for the really good and rare stuff and funnily enough the jeton and badge marked is somewhat better than then. Paul

I don't actually miss the lunacy of 2008 a market like that is positively unhealthy ... This whole medal buiz is quite unhealthy ... it is still very strong for the really good and rare stuff ... As always... ... funnily enough the jeton and badge marked is somewhat better than then. Beauty + extremely rarity (sometimes uniqueness)
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 If you say so... Looks like you don't find Imperial Russia stuff too esoteric ... By the way, nice photo you posted Chris http://gmic.co.uk/in...at/page__st__20 It helps me no end! The tone of the thread was "The guy wanting the info does not have it, but I do... so that should be enough..." ... so i thought I would keep that up.... :-) (Serious though, will get to it soon) It has nothing to do with Esoteric, it has been my experience that Foreign awards on British bars are usually less appretiated in the UK than the foreign awards are in their home countries. Especially Russia where there is a vibrant market for Russian stuff. Just by the way... I remember reading in a Memoire about the fighting in German East Africa... a Box of Russian Medals arrived at High command to be awarded as the discretion of the South African General commanding the troops in German East. A few higher officers chose what they considered the prettiest for themselves, noone having any idea of which was "higher" or lower. Best Chris
JapanX Posted October 20, 2012 Author Posted October 20, 2012 (edited) This 4th class St.George cross I was talking about. Here it is Issued for James Charles Kemp, Chief stoker. Most likely he got in summer 1919 from white army general Dobrolsky (while serving on destroyer "Stuart"). Edited October 20, 2012 by JapanX
JapanX Posted October 22, 2012 Author Posted October 22, 2012 (edited) Another interesting set with 4th class St.George cross from Civil War days for Englishman. Interesting that original asking price was $8000 and now it is down to $4000!!! N-wave of world financial crises? Edited October 22, 2012 by JapanX
