Chris Boonzaier Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 This was my wifes greatgrandfathers.... can anyone tell me who made it? Are there different makers? Some better than others? Thanks Chris
Dave Danner Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 "S" is G.A. Scharffenberg, Hofjuwelier in Dresden.
Chris Boonzaier Posted February 9, 2013 Author Posted February 9, 2013 Hi, were they the only ones who made these or is it a sea of makers like the EK? Best Chris
Beau Newman Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 They were also made by Glaser (G) and Roesner ®. The Roesner pieces often have distinctive sword hilts.
saschaw Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 The "S" actually stands for silver, as the gold parts aren't real gold but silver gilt here. But as only Scharffenberg used this mark, it is a cross by Scharffenberg however.
Beau Newman Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 As requested, here is a 1st class by Glaser that has the different hilts that appear on some non-Scharffenberg examples.
Deruelle Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Hi, Here is two examplar Let to right Roesner and Scharffenberg Christophe
dond Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Thanks for posting that side by side comparison.
