Three things seem remarkable to me:

    1) he was one highly decorated private

    2) he remained a private (!)

    3) he was constantly under the sort of fire where he, personally, individually, was being "shot at" by enemy artillery fire-- and never wounded!

I just received his award card. It seems as if he was discharged as a Junior Sergeant. But even with all of those awards, that is a really low ranking.
