This is my only photo of Serbian artillery in WWI. Captured by the Austrians. These are French Schneider 75mm M1907 field guns; the standard Serbian field piece.

It would be great to see any photos others might have ...

    Greetings Thomas,

I just checked the book "Knights of the Karađorđe Star with Swords" and found Ilija S. Žugić, artillery officer and later general born in 1888 in Užice, could that be your grandfather?

He became captain 1st class in 1915, major in 1919... Brigade general in 1936 and divisional general (two stars) in 1940.

Here's a photo from the book, if you wish I'll try to make better one tomorrow together with full biography.

Thank you - I already had much of this information - partly from my dad/aunt, and partly from an annotated copy of our family tree. What I have no evidence/source for is the posting to the Western Front. I presume this would have been post winter 1915/1916 after the retreat to Corfu. Any idea where such information might be thanks Thomas

You're welcome. His biography is not very detailed but there are some interesting information for example that he was on specialization in the French coastal artillery.

I've read about Serbian Volunteer Corps on the Eastern Front but to be honest I didn't even know that there were units of the Serbian Army on the Western Front.

Hi - sorry to have been absent - busy marking exams - as I said, all I do know is tha he was in charge of a Serbian artillery detachment there - whether this was purely symbolic or not, I don't know. What you say about French coastal artillery is already more than know - any idea where I might find out more cheers Thomas
