ccj Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Here's a nice British Officer's helmet circ 1880 used in Africa. I'm not sure if these were used in Indian or not. More information from the experts here would be appreciated.
Paul R Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 It is in surprisingly great condition. Was this example worn at all?
Jerry B Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 The liner system looks wrong for one of such an early date, more like the post 1925 Vero system on removable split pins, though the shape of the helmet does look to be the pre Wolesely (circa 1900) type.
peter monahan Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 The helmet is definitely early pattern. Not qualified to comment on the liner. Perhaps Stuart will share his expertise on this one.
ccj Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 I'll take more photos in the inside. It's green but doesn't look so in my poor quality photos.
Stuart Bates Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 (edited) I agree with Jerry the headband looks to be Vero's patented one of 1925. The foil lining was patented in 1933 but I think it was experimented with in the very late 19th century. Cavalry normally used the "hogspear" spike with the "petal base" but anything is possible. The "high-hook" is that as used to hold the chinchain on Lancer Schapkas. Stuart Edited October 10, 2014 by Stuart Bates
