922F
Thank you Nick--GREAT IMAGES, as usual. Years ago an exposition of portraits of the Armenian Patriarchs of Jerusalem contained many interesting photos. Found one, Yessayi Garabedian [1879?] below: Edited July 1, 2014 by 922F
Mathomhaus
I'd like to thank you for starting this thread showing pix of Russian Orthodox priests wearing their decorations. A lot of exceedingly high ranking bishops obviously functioned at a level where their personal crosses were hugely expensive and very unique. Some of your portraits illustrate the spirit of the classic Vasily Perov 19th century painting of priestly gluttons ignoring the poor people in the same room with them... I was glad to see that a handful of the younger priests (in their 20s & 30s?) are wearing crosses identical to one I picked up several years ago. I believe that entry level priests were not permitted to wear crosses at first - but for how long, I do not know. The important thing to me is that there are enough virtually identical crosses in your thread so that I can see that this was a definite pattern that was being followed. Up to now, I thought that all priests had complete leeway in their choice of personal crosses - with the exception that beginner priests could not wear ones with gems or enameling...
