2/5 GR (FF)— the Second Battalion of the Fifth Gurkha Rifles , Frontier Force - popularly known as the 'VC paltan'.

The battalion is called VC paltan because of the three Victoria Crosses awarded during the Burma campaign. I believe no other battalion has won the Britain's highest gallantry award three times - particularly in one sitting.

The Admin staff hasn't done much to the website of late. She's been talking of a complete overhaul while I'm tasked with 'getting on with stuff' artwise. That's obviously in between the massive amount of DIY required and lists of things to do that never seem to get any shorter.

I'm off to inspect the Lion poo for bells and pepper.

Gurka helmet all done

And because its pouring with rain I can't get on with the restoration of the Willy Rohr helmet. (I considered doing the work inside but the risk of a severe beating from the Admin Staff is too great). I've done a few sketches, they are postcard size while the Normandy Para drops are a bit under A4 so they bash out pretty quickly

Yeah, I'm surprising myself these days. Only another 6 months or so and I should have enough stuff for that show.

Unsure as to whether it should be a militaria fair with everything up for sale, an art sale or just on show at the local hall. I quite fancy the local hall as I'm a bit windy of people just walking straight by. Or even worse shouting "How '*&^*%$£@' much?!!!!! Your "Awesome" and "I'll have two" would be nice.

There are many bounds to my talents, I wish i could do a lot better but I'm improving....slowly, very slowly. If you look you can see that the sketches are done on hardboard as i tend to attack the painting rather than be gentle, perhaps due to me being more used to painting Trumpets, Bisas, Harleys and helmets rather than paper. The finish I get on relics took a long time to learn to get right and I'd like to get that look into the paintings which requires a whole new learning/trial/chucking in the bin circle.

I've been asked by people enquiring on my website to produce a step by step for a relic helmet painting so I'm planning on doing an M17 in the next few weeks and can bang it on here for anyone thinking about having a go.

Unfortunately I still have to work but I try to do this as much as I can to both improve my skills and hopefully to beef up the pension when it comes - if they ever let me get there.

I am sure one day you can make the transition from work to hobby and be paid for it. My wife has just done that and we are approaching our/her first year and I am surprised at the change when someone is happy rather than frustrated and being paid to do what they enjoy. I hope it pans out for you, remember, we never know how long we have so bettter to burn out than fade away! I think you could make a fortune! We all know something good when we see it!

Chuck - checked out Don's website, a great artist giving the deserved praise to a country worthy of it. Fantastic collection of art and militaria that sit well together.

Have a peep peeps, well worth a visit. I would have liked the pictures to have been a lot bigger though.

Would be bloody nice to be there and I'm hopefully heading that way, a long way off yet though. I've gotta get a lot better - practise, practise, practise and more time needed please.

What TacHel said. You have a wonderful feel for stark realism. It may be time to put self doubt aside go all in with your talent. Not quitting your day job, I'm sure Don would advise against that, but putting yourself out to more important venues and galleries. Oh, did I mention my lack of qualifications to advise on artistic endeavors?

As for me, I enjoy your art and I'd like to buy in at the entry level. I have one of Don's paintings (he is definitely not cheap) and we're negotiating on another. He lusts for a 1st gen Colt SAA that I own. I lust for a major work by him... but it is a really nice Colt.
