Ed_Haynes
Nice badge, What is Halhingol? More commonly and correctly, Khalkhin Gol, the river in eastern Mongolia when Mongolian and allied Soviet troops met and defeated Japannese invaders in 1939. The Mongolian badge/medal was awarded to the Soviet allies as well as to Mongolian troops.See a more extensive and more focused discussion over athttp://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5087 Edited March 18, 2006 by Ed_Haynes

Wild Card
Gentlemen,I have to ask the following question and apologize I missed the answer somewhere in the other thread. Can anyone explain why the inscription on the banner, ?Avgust 1939? is in English; as is (more or less) the ?HALHINGOL? on the bottom? Any insight to this would be appreciated.Thank you,Wild Card
Vatjan
For a very brief period of time (in 1940), around 6 months if I remember correctly, the Mongolians used the latin alphabet as their official script. Then they quickly changed to cyrillic, I presume under enormous Soviet pressure. This badge is the only tangible reminder of this period. So not really English, rather Mongolian in letters we can read.Jan Edited March 19, 2006 by vatjan

Stogieman
Moved to Mongolian as this is a Mongolian Badge, albeit one that is often awarded to Soviet personnel.
