Is there any Rhyme or Reason as to the different mounting styles on the bars?

Would an officer ever have worn medals mounted in the way shown in post 22 ?

I've been pondering this since your PM. Not sure as to the where, when and why of mounting. I wish I could remember half of what Rick tried to teach me.
