John F. Posted June 23, 2021 Posted June 23, 2021 Hello, can anyone identify this British proficiency badge? I believe it is a driver badge from WWI. Thanks!
QSAMIKE Posted June 23, 2021 Posted June 23, 2021 What makes you think that it is British????? The only thing that I can think in the British line is that it is actually part of a Marksmans badge. The rifle with the star above is a small bore advanced..... Here is a similar badge....
SillyOldGrandad Posted June 23, 2021 Posted June 23, 2021 The driver qualification badge in the British Army is a five-pointed star, not an eight-pointed one. Pete. 1
John F. Posted June 23, 2021 Author Posted June 23, 2021 Gents, thanks for the replies. What made me think it was British is it came with a couple of other British proficiency badges that are similarly made. 1
Bayern Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 The eight pointed star was and is in the Spanish Army a badge of rank for Field Officers. one star for Comandante, Two for Lt Colonel and Three for Full Colonel. Usually they were of about 20 mm diameter and braided in gold or silver thread over Khaki cloth . your star could be a Spanish Civil War era beret badge of rank for a Comandante ( Major ) 2
Marcon1 Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 Afterthought - could it be a edelweiss ?? Maybe from the 1st. world war - I'm sure the German collectors can tell if my thought is correct or wrong. Marcon1.
Bayern Posted June 25, 2021 Posted June 25, 2021 Marcon1 , I dont think in a edelweiss badge , first the edelweiss currently has nine petals, second are petals and not regular points 1
Guards Armoured Posted June 27, 2021 Posted June 27, 2021 John, I believe what you have there is the star of an RQMS, worn over four chevrons (point up) in the period 1881 to 1915. I found it listed (but sadly not really illustrated) in British Army Proficiency Badges by Denis Edwards and David Lanley (2005 reprint). Regards, Robert 1
Bayern Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Gentlemen, please forget the possible Spanish star and the Edelweiss, Guards Armoured centered the salvo, I found that at least in the NZ Army the Eight pointed star was authorized to the Quartermaster Sargent Majors as proficiency badge on top of the arm chevrons 1
Terry37 Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 ATS girls wore an 8 pointed star as an officers rank, but this looks a little big for that. The only ones i know of and have are metal. Terry
Terry37 Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 Error correction to my previous post about the ATS waring an 8 point star. That was a typo - the ATS wore a 7 point star. I am not sure about Wl or WAAC rank badges but they might be a possibility too. Terry 1
